Okay, so a few comments.

1) Sorry Paul! I don't agree with Quentin about the Scorpio...mostly. It's a great car in general, but not to look at. The 2nd generation was much better.

2) Clarkson seems to have taken his sarcastic style of delivery from Quentin Wilson. Interesting.

3) Convertibles made from saloon cars suck.

Can't really disagree with him there, though I do like the look of the Volvo 440 and expect that the Scorpio was quite a nice car for anyone sitting inside.

Interesting fact I remember about the Nissan Serena was that it was the slowest accelerating "car" of its day. A quick google search reckons a 0-60 time of 24.3 seconds!
 
Regarding the Scorpio, the opinion was that the best thing about driving it was that you didn't have to look at it. Now for me, I want to drive a good-looking car. That's why I own a Cougar. But I have a lot of affection for the Scorpio because it was basically a luxury car that had total chill. The only reason to not like it was aesthetic.

I did "offensive driving" training many years ago in a Volvo 440. Lots of of affection for it, though it was unfortunately easy to flood if it stalled, which isn't great if you're pretending to escape from assassins (or "terrorists" as we call them these days). But it was ridiculously hard to break as long as you kept it moving. First car I did a J turn in and had no problem with it.

Oh and Quentin, my dad had a Maverick/Terrano, and if it was good enough for him, then you can suck balls.:)

he clearly wasnt driving the cosworth powered one then which can keep up with a porsch...another top gearwhere jeremy and james race each other porsch versus a bob(cosworth v6) powered scorpio hurst...and nearly beat it!

they were/are purely for luxury..i once tried taking i bend that i liked to speed around in melina and nearly killed myself in it.
but if you need to drive to spain and back...there just isnt anything to compare it with.
you arrive feeling just as good as when you left...they practically drive themselves...and these cars had everything they are putting into cars today...heated windows ,auto tinting mirrors ,memory and heated seats front and rear ,4 way independent climate control front and back ,cruise control ,and did you know the early scorpio was the first production car to have abs brakes as standard...
the one suprising thing though is that the boot ISNT as big as the coogs:eek:

Sorry dude but your very wrong there, the first production car to have a form of ABS was the Jenson Interceptor ff which had a version modified from jet aircraft of the day, then crysler came along with a Sure-stop system followed by Mercedes with their Bosch version all prior to 1970 (y)

But was it "as standard", as in every single model had them fitted and they weren't an option? :)
