Evening all, so it looks like it might be the end for my Cougar :(

Clutch is gone (Best quote so far is £300)
MOT is due this month (will NOT pass lol)
tax is ending this month

are they worth much selling as spares or repairs? Id (very reluctantly) strip it myself but dont really have the best location for it.

Just after peoples thoughts before I make a final decision

Longevity is exactly the same as horsepower: How much you want depends on how much you want to spend.

Why not tell us why you think it won't pass an MOT so we can work from there? Could be that your Cougar can live on if someone wants to spend on it.

If you're handy with some spanners you can do the clutch in a day or a weekend if you take your time and save on labour. Tax and MOT are negligible as you'll pay that on any car you own. As suggested, why not list the full set of issues that need addressing for the MOT. Also, if you stuck a clutch in it and put right the few bits for the MOT, would you then have an ok car? Is it better to stick with one you know than one you don't? Would it ultimately be better on your pocket to fix this one than buy another?

As a whole scrap car, the best offer I saw recently for a 2.0 was around £200. The problem with selling as a fixer upper is you need a buyer that wants to do that. You may be waiting a while for that person!

exhaust is a bit blowy, suspension feels harsh, pretty sure the rear calipers have seized, its kinda hard to say as the clutch went a month ago so havent driven it since....to be honest I would have been looking to sell anyway, a possible move means im gonna have to swap for a diesel sooner or later for the drive to work. with that in mind im not really keen on spending almost £500 before any work needed when you can buy one now for just £700.

I know what you mean about spending on it and having a decent car (a car that I know too) rather than risk buying a new car and opening a new can of worms, but its not really suited to the town driving i'll be doing.

im not particularly handing with spanners no, can change the brakes, have changed suspension in the past but I wouldnt feel confident about tackling the clutch at all.

Scrap value for the car is £150-200 max.

When I have bought cars to break/do up - the least i have paid outside of the club is £125 and the most is £300.

Financially, breaking it will get you more than scrapping it.

However, like Kully has said - if the issues are small, spending £200-300 getting it right is cheaper than scrapping it and buying a car which could prove to have expensive issues.

Often, better the devil you know.

It may surprise some, but I regret breaking cat2 (my c2 with bottom end issues). Party because mechanically it was pretty sound other than the engine issue.

That said, financially, i did pretty well out of it.

dont really have the location to strip her down so looking to sell on to someone who can. ebay it is methinks
