I can't help thinking this should be in the OFS thread :D

For years i have made a point of getting my car in for the MOT 1 month in advance in order to give me time to fix anything that might need fixing. Well! i had a phone call yesterday reminding me that my cats MOT is due 4th March. I've had so many years with S97 MOT in September that i had completely forgot that DG is due in March, so i guess i'll be busy doing some pre-MOT checks. Oh, it's booked in for 25th Feb.

Best of luck with it.

I don't personally grasp the extent some people go to though to "pre-MOT" their cars though, if it works for an individual all credit to them, and I'm certainly not against people taking an interest in maintaining their car... But personally I find it easier just to wait to see if it gets a VT30 first, that's what you pay for in a way. Also with OPTL's now becoming almost de-facto in test stations suspension and steering checks are a lot more vigorous, you can't replicate this with a pry-bar on the driveway like the old-days of two-man testing.

By all means check what you want, I'm not "having a go" at all, like I said, all credit to you, but I just don't see the logic in it beyond checking the wipers, lamps, seatbelts and plates unless you've got an inkling there is an issue. Don't do what I did though not so long ago and present a car without working tail-lamp assemblies though, I did get laughed at for that.

Or the other way of looking at it is - that a little bit of tlc along the way, makes sure minor problems don't get worse and that things don't crop up as a surprise. Its not a catch all, but prevention is better than cure and knowledge is power

I don't disagree, as I said above I'm not "anti" anybody doing it, but I don't always grasp why somebody would essentially to the testers job (sometimes without adequate equipment) then sit back and wait for the news they were expecting!

Maybe I'm a bit of a sadist and like the gut-wrenching feeling and the jeopardy of waiting for the result!

Don't get me wrong. This isn't a panic! It's purely a statement of missed routine. Since i do all my own maintainence/repars etc, i like to give myself breathing space. Old habits die hard, and this is one of them. If i need to make substantial repairs to the car following an mot inspection and that inspection is done on the due date, then i would have no transport for the collection of parts etc, so i get in early, then if it fails, i still have a legal mot until expiry date to go get the parts and get back for the re-test legally.
Mainainence is routine for me so i would be surprised at a serious fail. DG will get the usual general inspections by myself and she will have a damn good blow out before she goes up the emissions dabacle of a money grabbing path.
I know i need to replace the O/S front wheel bearing which is getting really angry on left handers, but i have the parts for both sides. I might just have to get them sorted sooner than i had planned, ie: warmer weather . :)

I hope you checked the one in the glove box............

Yes i did Andy, and she passed (y)
A couple of notes from the guy writing the ticket who said these points are not worth listing as advisories as he trusts me to sort them, which of course i will.

Leaky sump plug: already ordered. (y)
Very slight exh leak at front flexi: I had an inkling this was blowing which is why i had a replacement made by Mart aka dogsbody, CatFabs cheers Mart. (y)
N/S/F bottom ball joint rubber split: this surprised me, but it will be checked and rectified if neccesary when i lift the car.
O/S/F Wheel bearing slight play: another one i knew about as it's audible on long left handers. I already have the bearings, just waiting for the time to get it done.
All the above are very minor jobs and can all be fixed in one day and all at the front end. I'll change the engine oil while she's in the air and replace that sump bolt.
All in all, a good day, even if it did cost £45 (y)
