Anyone know if locking fuel caps like the fiesta one will be able to replace the non locking cougar one?
Thanks

I think you probably will be able to get one if the petrol flap is failing to lock. You could simply replace the present cap with a lockable one. However, I do remember that some have a ventilation hole, while others don't. You may need to find out which it is, maybe get one to fit a mondeo one for the same year as your cougar, but get it from a ford dealer. Just an idea - Pid or Topcat will know more

So is the locking fuel flap broken? Could be an easy fix such as a corroded terminal, it'd save you the trouble of having to source a correctly fitting and vented cap and then still having to use a seperate key to open it.

Can't speak for Sam's reasons, but the flap lock is just a plastic rod - or at least it is on the Mondy, and looks like it is on the Coug - and can be easily jemmied or snapped through brute force and a screwdriver.

A few years ago we had a spate of Caravan Utilising Nomadic Travelers doing exactly this, then disabling the anti-syphon and nicking the fuel. Our Mondy got done while it was loaned to Ms. Mako's brother. I repaired the flap lock using brass rod that I threaded and drove into the actuator.

Trouble is that although that car wasn't done again, the spate didn't end. People started fitting locking caps. So the thieves just cut through fuel lines or drilled the tank. In a few cases, they just cut the straps and took the whole tank...

So, the practical upshot of that is to leave it alone & hope minimal damage occurs?

On the surface, I guess that's what it looks like what I was saying; "Suck it down because if you make it difficult, they may do more damage and make it worse for you to repair it."

But what we mostly did around there wasn't to protect the cars. We just made it intolerable for them to settle.

That said, if you think there's a risk of casual/opportunist theft, it's worth making it difficult for the thieves. Even CCTV with signs is enough.
