Mercury Cougar Fastback

I mean, that's a Mustang fastback with a Coougar face. Ford must've looked at this and gone, "Wait - what on earth are we doing? Anyone who wants this will just... buy a Mustang, right? And Anyone who wants a Mercury doesn't want a Mustang."

I like it, but... if a car is in direct competition with the same manufacturer's product, they won't sell it. Where would be the point?

Just look at the Fiero. That was an amazing car in V6 form, but Chevy thought it would steal Corvette sales so they killed it.

100%Mako, I thought “ That’s a Mustang with a different face”

I’d love a Fiero. Guy near me used to own one, I tried to buy it off him a few times but it was never really for sale.
I got to sit in it once when it was in my mates garage for some TLC. Anyone taller than me would struggle.

Exactly, Mabo. The funny thing is that Ford (and everyone else) has been doing platform-sharing since forever. But they were differentiated by... mission? Customer demographic? The equipment was very different, and there was very little overlap in terms of character, usually.

That thing looks like it wants to be a pony car being sold to Mercury customers. And those people would've bought a Pontiac GTO. Maybe.

I was in the States during the Mk1 Fiero's heyday (we'd come back to the UK by the time the Mk2 was released). As a kid, I thought it was cooler than my step-mother's Camaro Z28. But that's probably because everyone under 35 in Florida had a Z28. Fieros were the future.
