MOT Pass!

Well, nearly well done Frosty. When's your re-test?

Thanks Mako,

Having the new cat fitted tomorrow morning and the re-test done same time, so all things being equal, it should pass no probs,

I'll let you know (y)

I wish it would warm up a bit as i've got a bit to do with the old girl, fit the fog lights i got from dogsbody and fit some new rear discs and pads.... as they are an advisory from last weeks fail :(

How'd you get on, Frosty?

Alright thank you guys, got the new cat fitted on Friday and the emmissions test the CO levels went from 60% odd to only 2% and the car also runs so much better... its astonishing, it actually seems to rev and picks up better !! odd thing is there were no rattles coming from the old cat once it was off (unlike a previous car where the innerds fell out of the old cat) but it had obviously seen better days even though it was only 3 or 4 years old  very odd !!

The new rear discs/pads are being fitted next week, as the old pads fell apart when i took them out so stuck it all back in and as i only do a few miles to work and back in the week it'll be fine till next Saturday, i would have done them myself but for what he's charging and the fact its flipping freezing outside at the mo, i couldn't be a**** lying on the cold ground.

Once thats all hunky dorey, it'll be time to start saving to get the front brakes sorted, as I've found out one of the bleed nipples has been broken off on the right side caliper (n) by some ham fisted monkey in the cars past, so i'll have to get some re-manned calipers i think + new discs and pads later in the year...

I dunno, cheap cars eh !!! are they ever really that cheap once you get looking in depth, still i feel its worth it considering the very low mileage etc, etc as i'm expecting to hang on to this one for a little while at least !!

So you got a pass then I hope?

What you say about your rears is a bit...alarming, but I gather from your post that the guy who did the testing will be doing the brake work? So obviously he wouldn't let it out if it was unsafe. At any rate, go easy and take care.

Unlucky on the snapped bleed nipple. Have you thought about turning the stub with a small detail chisel and tapping hammer? Or better yet, a slightly oversized tap in the hole? I've done this before and if you're gentle with it, you won't hurt the thread and can just wind a new one in. If you back the piston off, you won't even lose much fluid.

Yes Mako it passed Wooohooo, yes same guy doing the rear brakes

The mechanic guy looked at the caliper and said it was rusted solid... and its snapped off flush with the caliper :( and what with the price of re-manned calipers being so cheap £30 each i figure may as well go the whole hog, but this will be later in the year

Tbh the brakes feel pretty poor, but then it passed the brake test so can't be that bad ?? he's a good bloke though, been going there for years, and usually gives me the benefit of the doubt, if something needs doing, as he knows i'll do it.

Congrats!

Yes well at that price it hardly seems worth the effort! Do you have a motor factor that lets you "sell" back the old caliper for refurb? The ones round here do that.

:EDIT: Wait - having said that, they price them to encourage you to bring the old one back, if you see what I mean. Not sure I'd get one for £30 round here. £45 maybe, with £15 off for a return.

Thanks, yes i actually work for one at the mo' (staff discount) may be changing soon, possible... but i've seen re-manned calipers on ebay for £30.00

Ah, sorry - I didn't realise!

Incidentally, a Rover Coupe one cost me £130 with a £40 return rebate not so long ago... Such are the perils of owning a rare car, even though it has very a common sibling with high parts commonality. Oh wait...

Anyway, £30 for a refurb is not to be sniffed at. Good luck!

No worries Mako, Got a call from my mechanic guy today, said he can do my brakes as soon as tomorrow, so i've dropped off my baby to his for the night and i'm tooling around in an ageing Polo, which goes from 0-3 weeks and is flat out at 55mph.... oh well, at least i can get to work tomorrow
