I took the Cougar for it's MOT today with a bit of fear of it failing. I knew the rear tyres were getting old but left them just incase it failed on a load of other stuff. I did the handbrake cable and leaky rear caliper a couple of months ago ready.

It got 8 advisories which I think is the same number as last year but they're different things

The strange thing is I didn't bother with some of the things on the last advisory as they didn't look that bad to me - and this year they haven't had an advisory at all.

Although it got 8 advisories this year it boils down to nothing really.

First three advisories are all due to slight corrosion on front brake pipes.
1 advisory is a front wheel bearing having slight play
and the remaining 4 advisories are all for the rear tyres! 1 each for being worn, 1 for both being perished and 1 advisory for the rear tyres being a different size to the front!

So I'm going to replace the two rear tyres - then I'll look up doing the wheel bearing - if it isn't too much money and effort I'll get that swapped.

So no mention of the wishbones which is what I was fearing!

So I'm well happy with the old cougar and it gives it another 13 months on the road:)

Thanks guys - I'm well chuffed with the cougar :)

Congratulations on the pass.....however a 'perished' tyre by definition should fail.

Please please please change them quick smart

The MOT tester commented on them after saying he'd like to fail them but he technically can't and looking in the handbook there is no mention of perished tyres being a reason for refusal: http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_410.htm - he did advise changing them ASAP and even gave me a quote for some tyres.

Hopefully I'll be picking a set of alloys with tyres up from a member on here this weekend or the weekend after so that will sort that.

I bet he did! My next, and all subsequent, MOT will be at a local authority run test-only centre with no vested interests in reparatory work. Good news on the pass though mate.

True however perished tyres can get you points on your licence and more importantly give out at speed and are therefore dangerous.

Anyway you appear to have it in hand!

Thanks for the info Si. Don't fancy points I'm guessing it's 3 per wheel as well? I've got to say although they're slightly perished it's not major. I don't look at them and think they look dangerous.

Fingers crossed I can sort these other tyres out for the weekend

You can get 3 points and a 1000 quid fine per tyre! It's more often 60 quid but it can be worse.

I know others don't like buying part worm tyres but I would consider getting a pair as an interim measure if new rubber is too many pennies at the minute.

I've never seen anything wrong with part worn tyres, people buy second hand cars which come with part worn tyres and don't think anything of it. You can buy part worns at a fraction of the price - you can check the date code and check to make sure they haven't had any repairs etc.

Picked up the alloys/tyres from a member on here today - Thanks Rob!

So tyres will all be sorted tomorrow. Got a couple of other minor jobs to do tomorrow too (door cards and boot leak)

Seeing as it's all been quite cheap to sort for another year I think I'll treat the cougar to a wheel bearing and strut top bearing in the next month or so.
