Mpg issues

Hi folks purchased my first cougar 2.5 v6 x pack.
I've only had the car for a day and played around with it briefly, what I've noticed is the mpg display reads as low as 12.1 mpg, and under different driving styles ie town, urban or motorway, the most it read was 13.9 mpg.
I put £30 in to return from buying and that read half a tank on the analogue gauge. I traveled 70 miles and used over 1/4 of the tank.
I've also own a Mitsubishi Gto 3.0 v6 and get a better return.
Is there a common fault I should know about or this about right for this type of car.
Your thoughts would be most appreciated
 
As said above, try reset the trip meters etc. Mine is averaging around 23 around town and about 30ish on a run. I reset the computer every time i fill up.

I normally get around 210 miles to a tank (£60ish) if i only do town driving.
 
it depends, when i first got mine a few years back i thought i had fuel issues, then after driving for a short while i got used to remembering to reset the trip comp thingy and it was a little high on on fuel, so i bought some Lambda sensors (oxygen Sensors) i replaced them and all was ok.
If you introdue yourself on the site and have a look around.. remember this site is the only real manual for the Cougar as Haynes or ford never made one for this car..
It may be worth while paying the subs to subscribe as it opens a world of really useful information chap..
 
As above, most instances of unusually high fuel consumption that I can remember have been due to faulty lambda sensors. You should be really be seeing mid to high 20s or even early 30s around town. On the motorway you can realistically expect to see early to mid 30s and even spanking it you should be getting around 18-19 MPG.
 
hi; just bought my v6 cougar and it seems to be doin just under 30 to the gallon round town drivin it reasonably sensibly; went on a 60 mile run on monday and it reckoned it was doin 37 to a gallon at a steady 60mph; previously had 2.5 ford probe and was doing 600 miles a week ( motorway ) and was returning 37.5 to a gallon; just sold a 2ltr turbo rover vitesse coupe which would only do 21mpg round town; so the cougar seems reasonable on fuel to me;
 
YEAH; i think the mpg for round town will come down a bit; but will be more than happy if i can avarege 25mpg round town; i dont really buy cars just on fuel economy; have run jags and big rovers in the past and as long as a car puts a smile on your face its worth a little extra in fuel just to enjoy; always have bought cars for cash with no bank loans so only have to insure and fuel it and basic servicing; cant see any point in buying a newish car on finance and not bein able to afford to run it
 
I replaced 2 lamda sensors for MOT this year. Showing 19mpg before and 31mpg after. On the, V6 the front one is easy, but the one at the rear of the engine is a tad awkward!
 
after all was reset I am more than happy with the wife's (my) new toy ;) on a recent 150 motorway trip I managed 34.9 and our current avg for the run about town (6 mile to swmbo's work or 4 to mine and or the daily shop) never below 25 unless I'm having fun. lol
 
Round town which is what I mostly drive (30mph and 40mph) i'm getting about 25+ but on the motorway this can go to 35 or more even driving fast. Its worth noting I only got about 18mpg after driving round silverstone the other month on the track
 
Would a faulty MAF cause bad mpg as i have been looking around and the error codes i have seem to point at the MAF has im getting eoor codes for both lambdas lean and rich ???
