Ever since I had my first Cougar, I've always wanted a set of US spec rear lights and, after several false starts over the years, usually involving eBay sellers pulling out once they realised that shipping would be needed to the UK, I've finally managed to get hold of a set.

I realise this is hardly going to set the modding world alight when measured against bodykits and turbo conversions, but I'm so pleased I've managed to get it done. In my opinion it gives the back of the car a much 'cleaner' look without the orange lens and it fits in very well with the design 'language' I'm trying to incorporate into my car, one of classy understatement.

Obviously my indicators now flash red, so I've retained my standard lenses in case Mr MOT Man gets a bit stroppy. I've seen plenty of imported Mustangs with red indicators though, so hopefully it shouldn't be an issue. A nice little bonus that I hadn't realised is that the US lights have an aperture for an extra little marker light, right in the outer corners. It takes the same fitment as a side repeater, so I'll be looking to lop a set of a scrap car somewhere and cross somebody's palm with beer tokens to splice them into the tailight wiring.

Anyway, enough yap from me, pics:

Nice one Rich, looks good, but you know you could have just painted your originals, which a few people have done to get the same result. Good luck with MOT time though, as although the Mustangs get away with it, think it's coz they come from factory like that, whereas the UK Coug doesn't but hey, who knows??? Liking it though.

I thought about painting the originals, but I wanted them to look as 'factory' as possible. Plus there's the potential MOT issue, if I painted my only set of lenses I'd be a bit stuck. As it is, I'll just retain the originals and take them with me in the boot when I go for the test. To be honest, I'm pretty much expecting them to say it'll fail with the red lenses but it's a ten minute job to swap them over.

looks good. you know I think this is the first time Ive ever seen anyone switch to the all red. in the states thats all we have is all red though so I guess it makes sense for you guys in the UK to want to switch to the all red. I actually have a set of the UK manufactured ones at my house waiting for me to get back so I can put them in. Either way its different from the normal ones there so awesome work.

I'm going to try putting orange bulbs in, rather than the standard clear ones. Hopefully a bit of orangeness might bleed through. If not then hey ho, I'll just put the standard lenses back on for MOT day.

What about puting yellow bulbs in reverse lights, and splicing them into the indicator circuit. Wouldn't give you a reversing light, but that isnt a requiremet of the MOT. Depends how important the reversing lights are to you I suppose.

Looks great Rich. I was in America last month and I happened to notice the Mercury Cats have those little side repeater lights in the tail. I'd never noticed it until then, but the Mercury Cougars are getting a little rare too.

Btw, do your rear foglights work? I could be wrong but I think most of their cars out there don't have rear foglights. This could be changing now however.

Yup, the rear fogs work just fine. The US lenses have all the same bulb apertures as the UK ones, just with extra ones on the corners too.
