Hi all,

I've just bought a 1999 V6 with 88k on it, seems like a great car to drive, its nice to hear the petrol engine again after having several diesels lol.

Unfortunately the whole bottom of the engine and the exhaust got covered in oil from a leak somewhere so it nearly caught fire at traffic lights!

Oh well, hopefully it won't cost too much to fix....

Cheers, Nick

Hi Nick,

Your leak may well be down to your rocker cover gaskets - pretty cheap and relatively simple to replace for the DIY'er with a bit of knowledge. I have a similar problem myself, but not enough to cause flames!

Either way, get it looked at asap - these engines do not like running low on oil.

Welcome to the forum by the way (y)

Hi Nick and welcome aboard as mr wig said check rocker gaskets and the front crank seal can leak . Also check the power steering havn't corroded.

Well i had a little look but my car knowledge is still fairly basic (although I'm ok with K series engines due to previous cars). I kept the oil topped up, put it in a local garage asap and I'll find out what the damage is on Monday. I think/hope its nothing terminal. Thanks for the advice.

Hi Nick and welcome to the home of the Cougar. Don't let the garage try and rip you off because you know very little about cars. If needs be, just come back on the forum in search of more help.

They won't rip me off, my dad knows the guy well and has used him for a long time. Cheers for the warning though! Thanks for the welcome.

a lot of garages seem to try and tell people the cougar is a specialist vehicle.

In some ways it is, but its a mondeo underneath....something some garages seem to try and forget when quoting repair work
