Hi,
Just bought a V reg 2.0 Cougar. Love the car, the way it looks and drives.

However, I'm a little concerned by the mpg. I deliberately didn't buy a V6 (looked at MG's, Rovers, etc) because of the mpg, but my new 2ltr is only returning 22.6mpg around town. I've been driving it like a Grandad to achieve this, it was showing 19mpg prior to this.

It's due back into the dealer at the weekend because it seems to be a bit 'jittery' at around 2 to 3k revs. The garage have put this down to a faulty breather hose which they are going to replace. Will this improve my fuel economy?

Also, do people think the breather hose theory is likely? They say it appeared to collapse at low revs? It's just that after a bit of research it seems that a faulty Lambda or MAF sensor is common.

Any help apreciated:)

Hi Ad and welcome to the place we call ukcougar.com aka "The nuthouse"
It sounds like your zetec is in dire need of a full service. The jittering can be caused by practically any system ie: dirty or clogged fuel filter, worn plugs or/and leads or coil pack. Depending on the symptoms, one of the main causes of stuttering at cruise speeds is the egr system, there is a simple "fix" for this in the subscriber "HOWTO" sections. MPG should be up around 30 and maybe 25+ around town, depending how you drive of course. If you need the lambda, get them to check and replace. If you have to do it yourself, get a universal one off ebay, known to be oem parts minus the plug and about 80% cheaper than a oem FORD branded one.

Hello and welcome aboard Ad. Hope you get the few little niggles out of the way and then will be smiles per mile! lol As Al (pid_16v) above has said you should be getting 25+ around town and into the 30's on a run. Mate, the V6 isn't that bad on MPG you know, as I get 27mpg around town and about 34mpg on a run. There's not really a lot in it to be frank.

Anyway, happy cougaring matey, hopefully we may see you at a few of the meets next year.
