New engine

For what it's worth, I have seen genuine C1 Cougar engines that had a knock sensor, and other ones that didn't.

I'm not 100% on this, but I think it was the earlier ones that didn't have the sensor, and the later ones did. Dave Chant's S-plate had no wiring for it, but his replacement engine (from a later C1) had the sensor. We just left it disconnected. We did the same when that same engine went into Steve Morris' ex-car.

Interestingly, a bit of Googling - so this is something I've just learned, not expertise I'm claiming like an obnoxious know-all (n) - tells me that many modern engines don't have a knock sensor either. Apparently a knock sensor is just a microphone listening to the motor, and only works at low revs/high load because at high revs it's too loud in there to hear the pinking. So engines made in the last few years use the ECU to monitor the load condition and determine whether it should/would be causing detonation.

Sorry for taking this off into the tall grass, but I find it fascinating.

To kind of agree with this i have 3 early 99 cougars with the return fuel system that dont have the sensor. But my late 99 cougar with the returnless fuel system has the sensor. Perhaps this is another change with all the mid 99 happenings ford had going on?
