Again, thanks for your responses, Question, wouldn't blanking the EGR off fail the emissions test? Going to have to leave all til next weekend now before get the chance to have a play and see if can get it sorted, mpg is now 20, better than 11 but not great, and watching petrol gauge steadily eat through a full tanks worth of fuel :(

Blanking off the EGR shouldn't have any effect matey. A lot of us already have the EGR blanked off, some cougs already came like this, whilst others didn't. If you have a read on some of the threads on here there is information about the EGR and how to blank off etc.

Re: Still not great MPG - has the car been fully serviced? It might just need a damned good service and also have you checked the air filter and MAF sensor? - the MAF sensor can get dirty and have an effect. You can get a spray to clean it, I had mine done by Add (add_issan) last year and it made quite a difference. Check the following link:

Hope this helps. Cheers, Tim

Thanks for the link and info, I don't think this car has been serviced for quite a while, the oil is black, should this be fully synthetic 5/30? Cheers to everyone. (y)

Hmm did reply to this yesterday and got message advising reply was to be approved? Anyway, thanks for the further advice and link :) Coming up to a week now that I have owned this car and so far these are issues that I have to fix if anyone can point me in direction or advise of poss' solutions, as don't get much time to get on-line and there's an awful lot of info available on here to search through (y) so far: Key fob doesn’t work, got a new battery and replaced but still dead, passengers door handle doesn’t retract once door opened and have to push it back down otherwise door won’t shut/latch, drivers heated seat doesn’t heat, Audio – 7000 RDS system works but no display so having to guess lol, brake wear warning light in overhead display is lit, I am told by seller that when mot was done tester said brake pads were fine and must be a dodgy wire? Also exterior bulb failure warning light is on although all lights work? However, as this is a 1998 reg car I see from a thread somewhere on here that 1998’s were not fitted with this warning light? A variety of different candle power bulbs that need to be sorted out for the right ones, on that note the 12v 6w wedge base for side lights, I can only find 12v 5w? is this what you use? oh and as on reply that hasn't posted, the oil, is it 5/30 Fully Synthetic? Thanks again to everyone for your replies and welcomes

Thats a lot of issues to cover in this section Rich. Identify the individual issues and check the relevent sections for fix's, most are there, somewhere. Failing that, post in the relevent subscriber "Problems" section. Your more likely to get replies to individual problems than a shed load in one ;).

Brake pad light could be the sensor wire come off or not connected or bypassed properly. Brake light out bulb if it doesn't go off when you press the brake pedal, check your third brake light in the tailgate. It has more than one bulb and could be one of those out. Happened to me and I was looking for the fault for ages lol. Mine was a 98 that had that fault so not true about the bulb out light.

Other issues as Al said, take a bit of time and look them up (y)

Hi dude start a new thread for yourself mate in new owners section :)

Welcome to the asylum Rich.

All early build Cougars had 7 overhead warning lights. Only late build Cougars had 5 overhead warning lights (minus bulb fail and pad wear lights).
The front sidelight bulb is H6W halogen, bayonet with offset pins not 5W wedge (501) as wrongly printed in the book (if yours came with one).

5W30 fully or semi synthetic oil is what you need, as long as the bottle says it meets Ford spec.
Ford used to supply semi-synth but for the last couple of years they switched to fully-synth.

Hi, I bought a Cougar last Saturday, Zetec engine, 16v - here's a pic
