A new review for the Cougar, not as favourable as I would have expected, the usual Capri references and a rather unfair and rather inaccurate dig at the Cougars predecessor too I thought.

Personally ill stick with Clarksons opinions (on both!) šŸ˜

I just want to say - for anyone who sees this post but not mine - that I was absolutely delighted by the review.

I actually can't criticise Jack for anything he said because he was honest about how he felt. "I don't like the looks, but it's prettier in person. And it should've had the ST200 motor because the chassis is great and could take far more power."

Criticism was generally leveled toward Ford, not the actual car per se, and Jack was an absolute gentleman. No sneering, no rolling of eyes. Just a plain honest review of a 26-year-old car.

All that said, Clarkson's review was back in '98, on one of the only two R-reg Cougars that ever existed. The landscape was different back then. What I'm thankful for is that Jack even bothered to review her at all! Ask 'Fast Ford' or 'Classic Ford' or any of those publications how they feel about the Cougar. Crickets.

Jack did us a service, and I respect that.

Sorry I totally missed your thread on the set up of this road test/review with Jack. šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

My comments were meant to be a bit tongue-in-cheek though, especially about Clarksons old Top Gear reviews as he was quite taken by both of Fords 90s Coupes. We can only have good said of our misunderstood coupes šŸ˜.

Great exposure for your car and the Cougar as an often forgotten car šŸ™

No worries! I told Jack that I trusted him to be honest about the model, even if that honesty meant insulting Sally. Made a point to say that I wouldn't be offended. That's why I was so pleased with the outcome and I think he did a good job of it.

Every criticism he levelled at her was either subjective (her looks) or deserved (the steering IS a little muscular sometimes). He did like her though!

As for Clarkson, I remember just how much he loved the Cougar. Bet that today he doesn't even remember driving it.

I like his reviews, he gets his hands on some great motors too!

I grew up watching Clarkson so I’ve always kinda taken his word as the gospel. Although he preferred the Alfa he was very positive about the Cougar in fairness and pretty much anything that had the same underpinnings/platform which in my books is great praise as he’s not always the easiest cookie to please is he? šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø

As for remembering, he might do, he was well aware of its Mondeo underpinnings and he’s an enourmous Mondeo fan, not sure of you recall the ā€˜funeral for a friend’ episode of GT they done dedicated to the Mondeo, but they picked out the ST200 as one of only two cars the trio all agreed was superb!

Richard on the other hand, back in his M&M’s days didn’t like the Cougar one bit! šŸ™„

Itd be great to see them revisit cars they reviewed in the past to see if they feel any different about them all these years later!…would Mr C still think the Probe could snap knicker elastics at 20 paces or that the Cougars styling featured some sublime detailing? 😁

I'd like to see that too. Id make him drive a Vectra and see him actually go back on his words that it really wasn't that bad at all. I had one and no it's no Mondeo, it's dull on country roads, and the engines were rubbish, but it does what it was meant to do and made long journeys pleasurable. It's far better than some of the modern rubbish I have to drive that they give me from work!

He as a life long feud with the Vectra doesnt he šŸ¤¦ā€ā™‚ļø, I actually quite like the mk1’s especially by today’s standards. I’m with you though, it done whst it said on the tin, nothing more but nothing less either. Was no more ā€œdullā€ than most of the other cars in its class of the time though.
