New young owner (:

Hey guys + girls, ive been using the forum for the past year or so, well trolling basicly, not posting :D

My dad currently has a cougar, 2.5 Xpack Blurple :smile5:

I'm 18. I can drive just no car currently. He's planning to buy a capri next year as he's wanted one for a while, if he does, when he finds one the cougar will be mine. So i will be a new owner soon enough ;)

Problem being insurance.. as i have no years no claims, and im only 18. The quotes i got from go compare were £5000+ for the first years insurance.. Which being a lazy ass student, wont happen.

Any ideas on where to get cheaper insurance? I cant go on my dads as i wont build my own no claims.

But yeah anyway, hi guys. im dan :)

Hiya mate welcome.

Try getting one from Adrian flux who specialise in high performance vehicles for young drivers. I'm 25 and my fiancee is 26 we have no no-claims and we have a very good deal with Elephant

Hi, to be frank I think it would be wiser to get more experience under your belt with other smaller cars before driving the Cougar. They are a pretty powerful car. I am not surprised at the insurance quote you have received, it bears out that insurance companies have found that older drivers would be more suited to the vehicle.

I have a racing lisence, ive done banger racing/young rally since about age 15

Ive also driven my dads cougar on multiple track days.

Experience enough? :D

But they wont take that into consideration while quoting me on an everday car :frown2:

Hi and welcome, might be worth a chat with your dad's insurance as some insurance company's if your on there policy as named driver, when you apply on your own they give you that as no claims, some other insurance will mirror what you get as a named driver as well

dont goto adrian flux they are rubbish mate.

best bet is elephant/admiral on a 10month bonus accelerator, thats what i used and at 19 i had a 300zx tt and my insurance had my mother 2nd driver and it kept it down to about 1200quid.
Due to the cougar being more modern and a big engine y our going to struggle.
But if you use bell.........have your father as main policy holder and you 2nd, named drivers still earn a no claims bonus buddy, just confirm that tho before getting it.

I only turned 21 when getting my cougar, still cheap as tho.

good luck.

Sorry mate, I would say not. It's ok being able to drive...but it's another thing actually using it on the road with other road users as well as thinking about pedestrians and cyclists. I've been driving for almost 24 years and only now consider myself "experienced". Banger racing and track days I'm afraid just wouldn't cut the mustard. Await the response from the boys in blue on here, they'll advise the same. Start with something a little smaller and less powerful or at least go for a 2ltr Coug to start - build up your no claims and experience on the road, then think about going for the Cougar. I'm an old fart, so just trying to give you some sensible advice (y)

I'm 18 - go to More Than, and fiddle with it until it's legal and go on your dad's. You get NCB as a named driver, plus they do free windscreen repairs (which is great since I think a new one is £900).

The main reason I bought the 2.0 Zetec is fuel economy, and there's a lot more 2.0 Mondeo's and Focus' around in the scrapyard than ST24's and Jags.

In response to being a mature driver with the Cougar - as long as your not a boy racer dick that hangs about Halfords you're worthy of driving a Cougar.

BUT TAKE CARE OF IT!

No matter what he does he will get spanked with the insurance, that's just life . I agree with WildV6 go the 2lt route

There are still things that can be done to the zetec engine and the cougar can still look standard.

Im 21 and ive been insured with Bell for years. Ive got a 10 month accelerated policy, 4th one in a row and I think this is the last one I can have. They are brilliant because they are cheaper than a full year plus you still earn a years ncd.

Problem is that if you keep getting 10 months then you end up with more years no claims than you have been able to drive for, which would cause problems! Chriss Knott / Adrian Flux / club affiliates are rubbish because they are affiliated with every car club! Absolute waste of time- nothing special about them at all.

My insurance is £550 tpf&t on a fully loaded V6 Cougar with Bell. I recommend them all the time because I did have an accident before I got the cougar, and they handled it brilliantly.

Id also hate to think what a quote would be if I started out with a cougar - far more beneficial to start off with a small car, not crash it, earn some ncd and some brownie points with an insurance company, then a few years later go and get a nice car. A load of my mates are still driving around in 1.1 and 1.4's still and look what I have!

Although if you could get the car for nothing, then aside from insurance companies laughing, do you really lose out? Plus add your parents onto your policy and make it cheaper- especially if they do not have access to any other cars. And dont tell insurers about your racing stuff either, rather than love it they will probably hate you for it. Rather, use your skills to not crash ey (y)

When I was 22, I managed to get fully comp for £1,500 on a V6, I would have thought you could get a quote for about £2,500.

Good god! that's what I actually paid to buy my V6!! to pay that for insurance is just ridiculous :eek:ut:

Problem with 10 month policies is that they are not recognised as full years by other insurance companies thats why A/Flux etc won't give you a good quote. My son had one in his first year, biggest mistake he made as the renewal was not a good price and when he tried elsewhere they ALL said he didn't have a years NCB. So they are ok if you stick with that company. BTW A/Flux have always for me never beaten on price.
