Since I am now selling the Cougar, I was intending on getting a BMW 6 series... That idea quickly went when I fell over at the insurance quote!

Looks like I will be getting 1 next year when I have built up my no claims!

Having a look around at what I can have for the next 12 months... and I have seen... I know I will get lynched for it... A Vectra C GSI.

Compared them to the ST220 and on paper the Mondeo is better, but the reviews are all saying the Vectra is better, except the gearbox which is better in the ST220.

Anybody have a bit of input on this? Have been a Ford/Jap fan all my life but I cant ignore the prices of the GSI and practicallity.

They are more subtle than the ST220 (will be de-badged straight away), and the Mondeo is usually in "in your face" colours which doesnt appeal to me.

Thoughts (and abuse) waiting....

Not really in your face colours, red/black/blue?! Driven both the vectra is ok but doesn't handle that great the Mondeo feels solid and handles way better, it's also better built I drove both as at one point I was deciding between the two before I was made redundant and actually wanted to vectra more than the Mondeo but I knew if I had of bought it I always would have regretted not going for the Mondeo instead.

Thats exactly how I feel now... I will buy one, and see the other and wished I had that... The majority of Mondeos I have seen are the blue ones, which I think is a bit OTT... I prefer something a bit subtle, that people wont recognise.

I was told the same about handling between the 2. The Vectra apparently has the better chassis, but Mondeo has the better set up, if that makes sense?

1 thing that is swaying to Vauxhall as well is the stereo/MSFW... There is a stereo you can buy with DVD/Satnav etc that still lets you use the MSFW controls, whereas with Ford, I don't know of anything that will let you keep the controls.

Looking at a few black Vectra's at the moment, hoping to test drive one, maybe a few next weekend. If I don't find a good one, will be looking at the Mondeo's.

The vectra chassis is no where near as good I drove each back to back!!, the vectra just can't handle the power end of. The Mondeo begs for more power it is controlled, handles superbly and has very linear power delivery. The vectra is crashy, jiggly harsh riding with little of the composure the Mondeo has. I actually sound like I am bashing the vectra which I am not I really prefer the look and interior of the vectra to look at and it is one of those cars I just want to own BUT it is no contest the Mondeo is a much much better car, bit of a shame as the vectra on paper looks superb I was very disappointed. :(

Gotcha (y)

Although buying a car on the strength of it's steering wheel controls is very odd. I'd go for the ST220 hands down - much better handling and uses it's power better. A Vectra just would not make it onto a list of possible car replacements for me. There's plenty of non-Performance Blue ones out there too - Black, Silver, Metallic Grey, Pepper Red.....even some white ex-fuzz ones appear now and again. (y)

I'm in a 2004 Mondeo Ghia X V6 just because I wanted the toys that come with the spec and aren't available in the ST. Definitely wouldn't have a Vectra instead. My mate has a Vectra C GSI and after a drive in mine he has been trying to sell the Vectra as he wants a Mondeo.

IMO, a much nicer car, and loads more toys lol

The only thing I don't like is the wood. Easily solved with some vinyl and a new steering wheel.

tonarme, you see the problem don't you, you asked a bunch of guys on a Ford forum whether to buy a Ford or a Vauxhall :D

at the end of the day, it's your money, only you can decide
find a couple of good ones, take them both for a play, and make your decision.
