hi my 1999 ford cougar has recently developed a oil leak , the leak appears to be coming from the area around the oil filter/sump area ....and also oil can be seen in the area just below fan belt, car is not losing a large amount of oil as
leak is just small drip at present ..... this has just been recently noticed....
any thoughts in regards this....

Hello Freddie, sounds very much like a crank seal leak which is a common thing on the V6. The general consensus is to leave well alone unless the leak gets very noticeable. Even putting a new seal in is not guaranteed to stop the leak altogether. Keep an eye on your oil level and always keep it upto the max. mark especially if you have a dipstick with a 'T' handle.

Leave a bit of clean cardboard under the car overnight if you want to find out where the oil is leaking from (or at least where it's dripping on to the floor from!)

As said, it mightn't not be oil!

True.

......and brake fluid... Well

If you can light your farts, it's brake fluid.

Good advice about the white card under the engine, but it will only really tell you what the fluid might be and where it's dripping from. It absolutely won't tell you where it came from in the first place unless it's the sump. And even then it won't be 100%.

Yep...i had exact same problem on my V6....crank shaft oil seal. You will need a puller to get the pulley off, 1/2 hour job to do and don't forget to soak the new seal in engine oil overnight, also a good move is to use some crank case sealer when re-assembling. TS
