Hiya,

had a Cougar back in the day... great car... been without wheels for a few years slumming it on public transport so thought I'd buy a cheap little runaround... and bought another blue 2.5 manual Cougar:)

Loving it all over again, always was a sucker for a good sized Ford coupe. Needs a few things looking at but £770 for an Mot'ed X-pack example with less than 40k on the clock and 2 owners was too good to pass up... shame it was 330 miles away but that's life :)

I see there are a few other Devon owners here - anyone recommend a 'friendly' local MOT garage near Exeter, as I am considering an HID kit on it?

I will be subscribing to the pay section for tech stuff as soon as I recover from xmas, in the mean time it appears to have a slight misfire/hesitation around 2k - 4k rpm, nothing drastic but where should I start looking? Also a couple of the dash lights appear to think they are optional...

cheers

Al

Hello Al and welcome to the forum.
Sounds like you've got yourself a good one.
Hesitation could be the IMRC as it should kick-in between 3 & 3.5k revs.
Which warning lamps are 'playing-up'?

Thanks for that will look at the IMRC this weekend, the abs/traction control light sometimes stays on - its about 50/50 and killing the ignition and restarting it usually sorts that, plus things like the backlight for the AC/fan controls - sometimes they illuminate, sometimes they don't... No real show stoppers but still needs sorting.

cheers

Welcome back to Cougar ownership

I sold mine 18 months ago and always regretted it despite having an X type and a Sierra Cosworth

In the end I bought another one recently

Yours sounds a lovely standard example but I bet it won`t stay standard for long!

Traction control light problem could well be caused by a dirty abs ring

Sounds like it just needs some minor tlc, subscriber section is like google - it has the answer to pretty much anything

Look forward to seeing some pics when you get a chance

Hello and welcome aboard matey. I'm also down here in Devon. I work in Exeter (Met Office) but live down in Ivybridge. Re: MOT friendly garages - you could try the following garage, as I used to use them with all my cars when I lived near to Exeter.

http://www.besttyresexeter.co.uk/ - ask for Dave or Andy. Tell them Tim sent you (tell them I used to take my Rover 214 SEi to them). They are a great team and Wolfy (one of their mechanic's knows tonnes about Rovers, if you have any friends with Rovers).

Hopefully catch up with you sometime. There's not many people on here from Devon unfortunately. Cheers, Tim

Hello and welcome back! You must be before my time because I don't recognise you.

If you're an old-timer you must know that your misfire is likely to be something age-related. Start cheap and work up: plugs (gaps), leads, pack. At the same time, check her breathing: airways, filter, TB. Lastly, check your breathers and vacuum system.

Have you got a code reader to give you something to start from?

Thank you all for the kind welcome and advice - I will be putting it up on the ramp as soon as I have time and will get some photos taken as soon as the seagulls stop using it as target practice! Going to leave it fairly standard (for now anyway) but plan on detailing under the bonnet - chrome plating everything that I can (having a business that supplies home electroplating kits helps :) )

WildV6 - I work in Sowton part of the week, we'll have to do lunch at the Barn Owl sometime!

cheers

That would be good. Will let you know when I'm about during the week at work, as work shifts, so not always around during the week. Would be good to meet up.
