open top canoe on the roof ?

your probably right.! I've got the canoe, but before i bought the next set of bars that comes up on ebay, i wondered if a 16ft canoe would sit right on them. the bars positions look quite close together
 
Has anybody ever had a vat of custard strapped to the tailgate? Since we're asking strange questions, I thought I'd get this one out of the way as I have been wondering about it for 8 years but was afraid to ask.
 
Strangely, I think the custard one has been done..........or was that a trip? :LOL:

I would imagine there will be some sort of gadgets that connect to the roof bars to support the canoe. If not then there's only one way to find out ;)

given that most people on here own cougars, i thought i'd stand a better chance of getting an answer than on a canoeing forum

if I was asking if anyone had put a 16 foot canoe on an old mini, which would probably be deemed dangerous given the size of the car, i'd understand, but this is a full size car. My query would then be more to do with the the distance between the roof bar spacing, as to me they seem close together. Both my previous cars had roof rails so you could put the bars where you like, ie as far apart as possible to minimise a "pivot point".

never be afraid to ask, but i feel custard transports far more easily in the boot of the car, unlike a canoe, but a lid also helps prevent spillage.
 
Lol. The only person I know that had roof bars and used them for recreational activities etc was Kevin, SDM. He now has a canoe also actually but I think he puts it on the roof of his Golf. In terms of someone experienced with using roof bars on a Cougar, I'd ask him. I no longer drive one though!

I do have his number though if you get stuck, I'll gladly shoot him a text or message him on Facebook for you ;)
 
I understand what he is trying to say here. With the roof bars fitted, the space between then is quite narrow compaired to most other cars out there. But if you strap it down correctly I can not see an issue.
I would just get it on there and give it a good pushing and pulling to see if it is stable.

not desparate at the moment., just wondering for the future, and got to save some pennies first. Borrowing my brothers estate for the time being . I think I'll measure some cars at work to compare the spacing anyway
 
I think it's safe to say we all understand it's just that the exact application in this case may be an undiscovered one. It's obvious there is an air of caution surrounding such a large object on a relatively small roof.

I will message Kevin anyway and see if he can offer any constructive advice ;)
 
I would of thought it was do-able even if the bars are close together, but surely would have to be complimented by strapping front and rear canoe point down to the towing eyes or something similar......
 
That sounds like the way forward. I'm sure I've seen it done on one of the Aussie cars or even on NECO maybe. I'm sure the ends were ratchet strapped to tow eyes.

I have messages Kev already asking his advice on sticking a canoe on a Cougar lol. I'll copy his reply in once received.

Well, we've recently observed how well a bunch of bananas travel on a cougar roof.. I reckon we are getting close to the dream of a mobile trifle here.
 
having measured the roof bar spacing, from the centre of the tabs, it actually turns out that the distance between is marginally more than a 53 plate mondeo. the distances from the bars and the windscreen and the rear window roofline is larger on a mondeo (longer roof), thus deceiving the eye that the bars are close together on the cougar:

Kev said it should be fine. He straps a 17'er on his Golf and he said the bars are about the same distance apart if not a bit closer. He said upside down and secure the ends to the car and it's fine. It needs to "balance" as it were on the bars for maximum security :)

Told ya he'd know ;)
