Parts hoarders or canny enthusiasts?

After reading Mark's thread recently where it appears a favourable result will ensue due to other members having the necessary spares - a wing and a door - to complete repairs, I wondered how many of us keep large items in our garages 'just in case'...

I have a rear bumper cover, I'm quietly looking for a front one - again 'just in case', plus the front seats from my old Cougar, a spare set of Cougar alloys that I'll refurbish 'one of these days' (and in addition to the two sets with tyres fitted - Winter and Summer) - all of which I'm being nagged to get rid of.

What Cougar-related stores do you guys have that you're hanging onto out of habit?

My shed is entirely engulfed in cougar spares. I am soon going to be ruthless and will be emptying some of it as I want my shed back. I have a shelf
Of stuff for me 'just in case' but Sod's law says I will need something I have not got

I dont keep a lot but what i have got is in mint condition, front lights, rear lights with gto covers, air box with k & n filter, head rests , front gto covers, radios, a spare set of alloys with brand new tyres on and a few other choice spares.
I keep most of it in case i ever want to put my cat back to standard and sell the upgrades

I have a spare engine, 2 gearboxes, fuel pump and sender, rear subframe, front subframe, interior plastics, alternators, radiator fans, abs pump, headlights, tail lights, seatbelts, sunroof, door and boot rubbers and a flymo box full of switches, fuses and relays :-D

Engines... Hmmm... I think if I ever needed an engine swap I'd find the extra cash for a 3.0 Duratec conversion... There was a place in Wilton nr Salisbury who used to do these iirc... Was quite cheap if you sourced your own engine and gearbox too...

It's a total nightmare, so I'm told. Some very talented people have done them and I've had the privilege to work on one (Lucid's old motor) but they are basically a compromise. Different looms, ECUs, connections... It seems that you can make it work, but really the ideal approach would be to start with nothing but a shell and work from there. I could be wrong though - I've never done anything quite so radical.

To answer your thread's original question, I had a stash of parts that were common failure points. Things like the coilpack, leads, brakes, gearbox... and then when Steve Morris got out of the Cougar game I inherited his stash. He gave it to me for free, bless him, so I will inventory it and see whether any of it will help a fellow member in the future (though I'm not sure who needs two C2 dashboards).

On the other hand, I have everything I need - with the exception of the chassis iteslf - to build a complete Rover Tomcat. And I mean everything, even windows.

I'd love a C2 dashboard to finish off my interior, the slight but noticeable colour difference between the dark grey C1 dash and the black C2 door cards really irks me. What puts me off is the nightmare stories I've been told about how difficult it is to remove one and fit the other.

I haven't done it, but it can't be that hard, right?

To be very clear, what I'm talking about is the instrument/vent binnacle cover - not the entire dash from door to door. So if that's what you want, it's yours. But you have to come here to collect/fit it.

Crossed purposes, Chris. The door to door dash is what I thought you meant. I already have a C2 binnacle, HVAC, headlight switch, centre console, door cards, steering wheel and leather... all I'm missing is the dash, carpet, pillar trims* and headliner!

*I had a full set of pillar trims but moved them on as I didn't like the contrast of the silver/grey colour against the cream C1 headliner, the C1s looked better so I stuck with them.

I've updated some parts on the car, so I don't need much stock, I have some parts, I updated to the CD6000, I have a CD6006e, but didn't get on with it and also added remote stalk, so have the original and a complete C1 dash with the heated screen switch for 99p of Ebay and a set of wings, you never know.

I do this for my Probes too! - Ebay is a great help. Cheap ex-dealer stock is always a help. Got a set of OE mazda 626 pads for £2.99 with free delivery last week. I don't need them now but they'll come in handy.

We also have a deal between us North East members that if a fellow NE member needs a part that you have we will sell it on at the price you paid for it. Nobody profits from each other. Quite often though s/hand parts are just given away. I gave a starter motor to someone who needed one - he can weld so I've stored that favour for a later date.
