Rear Subframe

Ive been under my Cougar today and the rear Subframe is rusty im going to wire brush it off probably next weekend whats the best paint to paint it with if it lasts a year I will be happy give me time to get a subframe and get it galvinised then have that fitted :devilish:

No....go with the big tin 960ml (US quart), i painted the whole underbody of an XKR inc all 4 wheel arches, i was scrapeing the bottom of the tin by the time i finished but it did the lot. I left it 2 days & then went over it again with 960ml of chassis coat black, when it goes off, it goes off. When i finished painting the POR 15 i thought i'd be clever and save the brush by soaking it in paint brush cleaner, 2 days later when i went back to it, I could have hammered a nail in with the brush, it went rock hard even though it was imersed in paint brush cleaner for 2 days!!! I got some of this POR 15 on my neck and it dried...2 weeks later it was still there, had to wear a polo neck jumper to hide it......god this stuff is tuff !!!!!!
 
...MOT failure today...may have to scrap my low mileage MK2...anyone know where I can get a rear subframe?

...Thanks...I couldn't find one on E-Bay for either model...but my friendly garage found a welder who can repair
it for 350 squid...the cheapest I found one was direct from the USA, OEM part but half the price of Ford UK,
but by the time the mechanics have removed all those seized bolts etc the labour cost would make it even
more expensive...so I'm going for the weld it option...

could you see if any of the braking ones on ebay have subframe that's any good?

...I have another complete Cougar but I can't be sure the subframe is any good...I've had a few
bad deals with breakers, where they say the part is good and it turns out to be nearly as crappy
as the one you need to replace...

this was the best deal I could find, I may order one when my finances improve from this hit...

Agreed. I even have a spare subframe. I don't even know where OP is though.

Its not cheap getting the sub frame changed but if your hanging on to the car its well worth it in the long run, got mine from the US and a local garage did the work, i painted mine with about five coats of black stone chip paint as it will flex and not chip off like hammerite, those OEM parts wont be around for long so at some point it will not be an option, there is little out there new as far as parts go, yes there are some common bits to the Mondeo but a lot of parts are not, makes sense to get as much done now while you can.
 
I wouldn't recommend the weld it up option as these subframes rot from the inside out.
If its gone so bad that its failed the mot it will already be in a weak state and no amount of patching it up will last long or give it strength.
Bear in mind that your rear wheels are held in place partially by this subframe..so strength is a necessity..
Take procomms advice and renew it..especially if its a rare c2.

A good search around breakers for mk2 mondeo's can give great results...i found a new one (still with stickers)which had been put on a poor old decaying mondeo...cost me £30:eek:
The trick with breakers yards is to look for yourself. not ask them to find one.
I managed to cut mine free of the dying mondeo in just under an hour.

If you need help with any of this ask....were all eager to save a c2 here.

Wow ,a complete frame and from an st200 too...im sure this will have the larger roll bar too..

The ST200 came with 19mm front and back same as the stock cougar has, the mk2 mondeo has a 19mm at the back and 17mm at front. There are 2 sizes of aftermarket ARB the 21mm that was made my Rousch and then BAT and a 24mm hollow bar as is fitted to Damiens old 3Ltr now being lovingly restored by Wil Leaper (y)
