After advice, managed to remove front no plate using plastic tape in 'sawing action'.
Noticed some old screw holes in bumper, so maybe the car originally had 'brick' (were these fitted to Aussie cars as standard?....)
Will now fit new no. plates which are CO52GAR 20160607_181904.jpg20160607_181443.jpg bought recently from DVLA, couldn't resist and had to be for this Cougar!

A hair-drier and an old credit card to remove the residue. Use Lockheed brake/carb cleaner for the finer points.

Looks like there's been some rubbing, so a compound might be called for.
