Respray, Wrap or Scrap

Could you afford to lose the money? I.e. if a Skoda Fabia rear ends you shortly after respray and you are offered £1000 settlement by the insurance companies where would that put you financially?
The same argument could be applied to your XF if it was written off. No doubt you've got gap insurance, but how much did that depreciate by when you'd just driven it off the forecourt?

None us here buys, mods or restores a car with a financial advisors hat on. Otherwise this club would not exist and we'd all be driving second hand boring euroboxes.

Thanks for all the advice, some people are right and putting 2 grand into a car even though i love it does not really make sense to me, I am basing this purely on my own thoughts and also that the wife has been trying to get me to buy a newish car for the last couple of years so investing that sort of money would get me a right load of earache.
Rich B thanks for your offer and knowing your standards a few scratches would still put it near mint but i followed up Johns lead today and got a result.
John sent me a link for an ebony breaker in warrington which as it happens was right on the border of warrington and only 3 miles away from me, I went to see the bloke today and got a bonnet and a boot from him, now considering he has a rear bumper on ebay for 60 quid i feared the worst when i asked him how much he wanted---his reply er how does 50 quid for both sound , I had to bite my lip to stop me grinning from ear to ear RESULT.
The bonnet is in near mint condition with only a few stone chips and easily sorted
The boot has quite a few surface scratches ( he admitted he had cardboard boxes stored on it ) but since i got home i got the buffer out and used G3 cutting compound and T-cut and most of them have gone
Both now need a really good dose of polish but i will probably wait until they are fitted for that.

If anyone is interested most of the car is still there its an ebony manual V6 and he rekons the engine is very good and has only done around 60 odd thousand miles

The point was taken as intended by Rich. It's ok to commit the money so long as it is recognised that it's never coming back. My XF is indeed a depreciating lump. I knew that before I signed on the dotted line and the loss is acceptable.

If OP really really wanted to preserve this car to the highest possible standard this thread wouldn't be here. You bought your car new too and can afford to respray yours 'just because'. I had my black Jag resprayed last year equally just because.

I asked the question because the OP clearly had doubts about the cost versus value of a respray.

Sounds like a good compromise has been reached though with a combination of good used bits and maybe a PDR chap and a machine polish. :) A good example of the old 80/20 rule in action.

Mikey if you want a professional to do the polishing have a look for someone local from here;

I have experience of one of the businesses on the list and what they can do is amazing, I don't know if it's the product, the techniques or a bit of both but I watched them take a very faded red 911 to the point where it looked like it had had a fresh paint job.

Not cheap but cheaper than a respray!

well all fitted , just a little bit of fettling to be done like badges and so forth.
No spoiler and no scoop hmmmmmm i like

I almost didn't put a spoiler back on s97. Glad I did but I certainly wouldn't blame you if you chose not to. Not a fan of the scoops at all. Good work as always :)

Much better without the halfords scoop, needs the spoiler I think

If not I expect there'll be a queue forming!

Agree with John, the wiper ruins the side profile. That said, it wouldn't look so bad with the Mondeo mod and the spoiler ;)

Definitely no scoop though! :)
