Road tax

Hopefully I’ll be putting 6months tax on my Cougar next weekend. It’s the joy of car ownership !

Personally I’ve long thought it should be transferred to fuel.
Whatever revenue it brings in should be calculated and broken down to give the gov accountants the same value but added to the cost of fuel.
Infinitely fairer, less costly to administer. Unavoidable.

If your car is more economical you pay less. If your car is a guzzler you pay more.
if your car is in the garage for repair or off the road because you don’t use it over winter you pay nothing but that vehicle is not wearing out our superbly maintained roads, so that’s fair too.

Admin becomes automated as the retailers add on an agreed sum per litre and pay to HMGov as part of their business tax.
Admin cost saving for HMGov, potential reduction in our income tax but that part is dream land !

It has become more of a monitoring tool (and reason for punishable offenses) than the revenue itself.
Who has insurance (checked at time of taxing);
Who has MOT - same.
Who is using their car all year/summer only (SORN);
Which cars are on forecourts.
Cars taxed/not insured or insured/not taxed attract suspicion - PAY UP.

Rik, as yours was first registered between March 1st 2001 and March 23rd 2006 it should be the lower amount. (y)

The VED for Cougars registered before March 1st 2001 is a flat rate of £380.

They’ll be getting £198 off me on my Cougar for 6 months on a pre 2001 car above 1549 cc.

I might regret looking into this…….
My TT is 21st March 2001 so classed as L for emissions. £404.25 for 6 months.
Firkin heck, that 21 days makes a difference.

I‘d be better off with another Cougar !

This website was really useful. CAR CHECK - Biggest FREE vehicle reg check
gives first reg date, and Co2 tax ratings to use on HMgov tax website.

The TT will be classed as K, the asterisk on Andy's image says all cars 2001-2006 over 225g/km are classed as K £430

Is the new tax rates automatically adjusted as I pay £36.31 monthly direct debit and nothing has changed this month and I haven't had any email notification that it will 🤔

Just put my mate Adam's new BMW into the site for a laugh😂
But if he can afford £58000 to buy a car, he can afford the tax!

The 'first licence fee' is what he will have to pay next year. To drive it off the forecourt it was more like £5000 extra, although thats included in his payments!

Honest John tax check gives £236.50 for 6 months tax on my TT.
This probably means I’ll hang onto it. Not as bad as I‘d figured.

Didnt know that site existed, pretty good, just needs your reg plate.
