i have just noticed my front tyres are different to the rears ,the fronts are wider on a different profile is this normal on a v6 ?

No, your traction control will probably go wild at 70 ish mph due to the different rolling circumferences of your wheels.

only if the different size is on the same axel, running 18s on the front of my car with 16 on the back at the moment and no issues (y)

No issues but surely your car's spent most of its time with this config being sat on Tony's drive?

The car was designed to have the same size on all 4 corners.

That is true my point was the traction control is only affected by the tyres being different on the same axle, if the tyres are the same size on the driving axle then TC wont play up (y) (atleast not in my experience)

It's not only wrong but dangerous too. Oversteer on an AWD or RWD car is largely controllable with throttle. Oversteer on a FWD car usually just means the back swings out and keeps doing so until you stop changing direction - much like a doughnut towed by a motor boat. Having narrower tyres on the rear is hugely irresponsible of whoever put them there, and as a minimum they should be swapped for the rears. Ultimately though, as Manos said, the car's spring & damper rates and anti-roll bar stiffnesses were all set up for a car with an equal footprint front and rear - so the car will never behave as well as it should until all 4 tyres match.
