What percentage of UK Cougars are V6's

Does anyone have a rough idea? I read somewhere there are actually more V6's than Zetecs on the roads here. I always thought it was the other way around. Also how can you distinguish a Zetec from a V6 simply from looking at it, is it simply no foglights and no badge where the V6 badge is?

Thanks guys!

I can't speak to the numbers, though my perception is the opposite of yours for some reason. This might be because the V6 is more popular with club members though? The HowManyAreLeft site shows more V6es year-on-year too, though I don't trust their figures.

Among cars owned here in the club, I'd say it'd be difficult to tell what you're looking at with the bonnet closed and the engine off, apart from the badges, as you say. For example, I have one of each, but have raised my Zetec to the same spec as my V6 with leather, fogs, etc.

The overhead console might be a giveaway, I suppose?

according to how many left:

C2 V6 Auto - 65
C2 Cougar 2 - 248
Cougar - 1200
Cougar V6 auto - 363
Cougar V6 - 3000
Cougar VX v6 auto - 8
Cougar VX v6 - 446

Clear as mud :)

Great info guys, thanks! Is it pretty much a case then that anything that distinguishes a V6 from a Zetec can be fitted to the zetec?

Not all V6's have a badge on the back too mate so it's a little harder to distinguish than that

Is that standard mate or just some debadging taking place?

pretty much.

I am having a v6 exhaust fitted to my zetec this weekend. It will need some fabrication, but that's why localloon is lending his expertise

Yup, it's been done more than once! All Cougars, be they V6 or Zetec, X-pack or not, have the same wiring loom. Pretty much any bolt on parts from either will fit either. There are a few little idiosyncrasies, such as the V6 and Zetec dials having different calibration, but it's pretty much all interchangeable.

EDIT:

Si types quicker than me and beat me to it!

I would say in standard production trim, regardless of options, the only way to distinguish two cougars apart is the V6 badge on/not on the boot lid.
As previously said though, once the modding starts, internally and externally, so adds the confusion ie: without lifting my bonnet, tell me, is mine a zetec or a V6? Ok my member name might give it away, but i have owned two V6 cougars.
On numbers, i would guess there are more V6's simply based on the publicity that engine had at the time. I suppose i must have a bit of a rare beast now, seeing as i own a 2001 C2 zetec which to the uneducated is a C1 with a bodykit and a personalised plate .

In standard trim, does the V6 not have a ever so slightly larger diameter exhaust tailpipe?

The 4 pot has a circular tail pipe as standard and the V6 one is oval. I know it's really sad I know that! Was one of the first things I noticed back in the day when we went to Ford to pick our cars up.
