1. Why are Cougars so rare to see around ? Running Costs ? Age ? you can buy a lot car for money,

2. So would you class them same bracket as old bmw,Mercs etc etc.............? put peeps of the engine size ? and running costs !

3. would you class the Cougar as a womans or a Mans car ?

4. Has anyone on here bought Cougar after Cougar, or cherished it from NEW :)

All questions are ment well, not ment to offend anyone ..!

Best thing for me is the Comfort, Steering, and sound.....!!!! Love it.

1) Only 10000 sold in the UK as it was a bit too expensivr for what it was and not that popular. It started off as a rare car and although parts are very cheap, they're much more expensive than what the current generation of oeners are used to. When they need work, they get broken and scrapped.

2) Quality of the cabin etc isn't up to BMW or Merc standards although equipment isn't too bad. It's basically just a Mk2 Mondeo in drag though and whilst this makes them cheaper to repair than the German cars, they lack the pedigree so I personally do not regard them as equal to BMW or Mercedes.

3) Man's car. Women bought Pumas.

4) Had two. One from a young age, he second a clapped out old heap. Second one was the only car I've ever regretted buying. It went quite quick. Loved the first one at the time, but things move on.

Good car for the money, but these days everyone thinks about fuel consumption and would rather get poor by stealth through depreciation on newer problematic diseasals than through filling the car with petrol where they can see what they're spending.

1 As Jamie said not a lot sold initialy
2 They are not driven by T***s
3 Blokes car definitly
4 Flamenco assasin bought one from new and bought a cougar 2 as well.

also to add to 1 - a few are being scrapped now due to some uneconomical repairs - wishbones are expensive - rear subframes likewise, alternator & clutch will also see you get some hefty old quotes to swap.

one of the many benefits of getting stuck in with this place (y)

1. Same as Charliedc001
2. Same as Charliedc001
3. Same as Charliedc001
4. On my second one - had a C2 V6 which has now been reborn as "The Bogey". Now driving one of the three 4x4 Cougars in existance - the first one to be converted if memory serves me correctly :)

Had 3! Technically briefly owned a 4th too which was a straight buy/sell transaction. They're alright cars for the money and like any car of their age there are parts which cost a fortune should they need doing. That aside, a well kept one will still, IMO be a lot of car for the cash and also still ahead of its time in looks etc. most are looking well worn though with the seat bolsters etc wearing out.

Just picked up this thread, but well, not much to add really.
I got mine 'cos as you say it's a lot of car for the money, not too bad on fuel or insurance considering the engine size. Tax was cheap since I got an X reg. Y reg was double the road tax. Definitely a bloke's car though, the Puma was for the women.
Cheers

I think they are brilliant cars for the money. its worth spending more on a well maintained sorted one as the bills are disproportionate to the value of the car.

Lost count of how many i have owned. Four in terms of personal ownership.

First one, I sold on, second one the engine gave up the ghost. Third one was sold on, and so was the fourth.

Restored one after it failed its MOT, well chuffed with that, and the new owner of that car has always been happy with it.

1) As above, there just weren't that many to start with in this country.

2) Not the same at all, but only because of the marque. It's a GT car in the most traditional sense and despite being a couple of cylinders and a few BHP short, the V6 version is easily the equal of the Porsche 928s for engagement and cross-country ability. There, I said it. o_O

3) Difficult call. The Puma definitely appealed to girl racers because of its neat bobtail design, tidy handling and absurd turn of speed from the 1.7 version. And the Cougar, (which in terms of power-to-weight ratio wasn't really that much quicker) appealed to men, I think because of the styling. It's actually quite an aggressive-looking thing. But some women love the design, my missus and RichB's (I think?) for a start.

4) I'm on my first, bought in February 2011 with 70K miles on it and three previous owners. I'll be buying a second - additional, not replacement - in the new year. Because that's just how good they are...and I can't afford a Maserati.
