Greetings Cougar folk. I have just arrived in Cougar Land, although somewhat prematurely. In fact I am only half way over the wall at the moment, still having one foot in Probe Land. Last week I left home in my trusty Probe V6 (157000 miles and running perfectly). I turned on the radio but within a minute I thought "why am I listening to this drivel when I can listen to the sonorous growl of the Mazda KL-DE V6 ?"-Radio off. Now that may well have been tempting fate! Within 5 miles the worlds most perfect car dropped dead. It had previously dropped dead at 137000 with failed imobilliser card, but I removed that and bypassed it with jumpers and she came alive again. This time it may be distributer since there is no spark. On the other hand there is no smell of unburnt pertrol at the exhaust. Jumpers in the diagnostic socket do cause the petrol pump to run, but is it running when the ignition is operated ? Anyway this is all "2BDUN". I had been planning to get a Cougar, but taking my time to find an A1 by July when the Probe MOT was up. As it happened fate suddenly changed its mind about me and a Cougar appeared for sale locally. Upon inspection it was in very good shape except for well worn discs. I judged them to be an MOT fail, so I said nothing to the salesman, but at the last minute requested he put an MOT on it, although it still had 5 months to go. He agreed and as planned (by me) they made him put new discs and pads on the front. Dont you just love it when a plan ..etc. . I have driven it a few days and found that it is in fact "The worlds TRULY most perfect car". My Probe was a mere pretender. To be fair the Mazda did have a better growl from under the hood, and it does have a 3 stage variable induction tract - which never went wrong ! . I have noticed that the Cougar revs dont spin up as fast as the KL-DE engine, but I think that is because of longer accelerater pedal travel distance which I havn't adjusted to yet. When changing insurance over I got charged an extra œ130 ! Why ? Normal rip off I suppose. My plan is to go over it underneath and apply Plus-Gas and underseal every where in advance of anything to be done in the future. Will change rear discs/pads in the spring. Its got 215/55 s all round. Depending on what happens to the worlds second most perfect car (albeit dead), I will probably bring the 225/50 s over - same rolling diameter so there should be no problem. Its a pity I cant use the Mazda wheels since they have "Fan" shaped spokes which help extract cooling air over the discs. Next step is a tow bar. (1) Anyone know about towbars ? (2)Anyone know about fitting extra driving lights ? (3)Anyone know a good point under the dash to pick up 12V either through the key or always on ? Or (4) where is a good place to get a lead through to the engine bay ? More posts in due course.

Well mgreen, you got yerself a good un by the sounds of it :)
Welcome to the land of lunacy lol
in answer to
1) ebay Towtrust as they do a fixed one where the hitch bar can be removed with 2 bolts ;-) either that or pm Sparky as his place has been known to knock one or two out lol
2)why would you want to spoil the front end with extra driving lights? either upgrade to HID or get some 90% brighter ones, lights on these are very good if set up properly
3)as above.....or cig lighter
4)Behind the fusebox LHS into bulkhead

If you subscribe mate your answers will be answered very quickly because what isn't on this forum about the Cougar isn't worth knowing :) I thank you...(y)

Mazda...Probe.... .....be gone you fowl demon!

Welcome to the forum mgreen. Fit an induction kit to improve the sound, and a ST200 throttle body to improve throttle response. (y)

Welcome along buddy!

I too have owned a ford probe, albeit the 2.0 version. And they are similarly, completely different.

i have owned a few probes, and always made sure immobilisor was sorted! does defo sound like that is the fault though! if you want it fixinf fpoc is the best place for that... i am still registered on there but havent posted for about 4 years :/

the reason i went for the cougar was because i wanted the real car, and not the mazda/ford lovechild! 157k on a KL-DE though? any work done with piston rings or maybe a ZE change you not aware of?

welcome mgreen, i too was a probe owner previously, seriously you can get the same growl with a few tweeks such as induction kit and i have gone with blueflame stainless system , including decat. on my second cougar now, 3rd if you include buying my first back from auction, go for a set of hid upgrades, about £40-60, what a difference, if you want 12v, good place to start is cigarette lighter or radio if you want it switched, depends on what sort of load you plan on running from it, you dont want to be popping fuses..

Hello and welcome aboard, I've never owned a Probe either...but did look at buying one once, but then my heart was stolen when I saw the Cougar....no competition! lol Get some pic's up of your coug soon.

I lied a bit earlyer I do like the Probe (stop that laughing) and did concider one for a while, but then it looked dated and I went for the cougar, thing is the more I see them now being driven about I feel that I may have over reacted as they do look alright, its just the odd few that we have seen at shows that raise an eyebrow to taste lol

Taste? some of them are are awful, I swear that no sane person would inflict that damage on a car!

I had three probes well four if you include the one which a member of fpoc took to fix and stole long story. But gave them up got fed up with leaky rocker cover gaskets and having to pull codes all the time so sold the three of them last october, not looked back the only thing i miss is that roar i used to get from my scorpian exhaust but im sure with future mods i will have the roar back soon
