The yellows, reds and to a lesser extent greens are less effective than good quality stock stuff such as Mintex or Pagid unless they are at track temperatures...which you should not be getting close to on the road

I disagree.
So called "fast road" or competition pads and especially grooved discs would only ever be a benefit if the brakes are getting hot over a sustained period. If this is the case then thats not standard driving.

I find my Green Stuff pads with my black diamond drilled and grooved discs work perfectly fine and are better than stock items. But they are not cheap.
I've learned a lot about the Cougar and its capabilities from Paul, but for once I have to sort of disagree with him and support you almost entirely.
If you frequently take your daily-driver Coug out on track, grooved and slotted with high-temp pads makes sense. And putting standard brakes on it when you're not on track is a complete waste of time.
But if you're just cruising around and not getting her hot, there's absolutely no point in going nuts and spending a fortune. She can out-brake any level of power you can deliver.
My equivocation here is only because Mondeo brakes are generally bad. They fade quickly so if you do anything even close to "spirited" you're gonna be standing on the brake pedal hard. And it's going to push back at you.
I take Paul's view that there's no such thing as too much braking. But if you're driving like that on our roads in such a way that neccesitates it, you probably ought to have a word with yourself.
I only did my brake upgrade because I felt the standard items were not up to the job if I needed to stop very fast. No other reason behind it really. I also fitted Braided brake lines as well.
I absolutely have no problem with you doing that. And even if I did, who am I to tell you what to do to you car?
I've long been an advocate of people sorting their brakes before doing any power upgrades, mainly because speed is about energy management. If you can stop faster, you can keep on the power longer. My only problem with that is you share the road with other people.
Braided hoses are a great modification though. I think they should be mandatory.
Having tried many different brake setups over the last 12 years of ownership I have found that red stuff pads matched to EBC drilled and groved discs provided better standard road use braking than black diamond pads and discs which were marginally better than stock in that brake fade happened alot later. Yellow stuff I found to be to soft a compound for the weight of the cougar and they stripped themselves pretty quick, green stuff required more he's than red stuff to be much use on the road, that said I am pushing over 200bhp at the wheel and I find stock brakes are perfectly adequate. Braided brake lines make a huge difference and in my opinion should be the first Modification, I will get mine fitted if Jim ever posts them
It's well documented that braided hoses do test the text of time. But a well combined set of pads and disc's I have used mintex pads and disc's also ferodo but with my experience .Mintex pads and disc's are superior.
