Well it seeming more and more likely that the Cat outside in my street right now may have been dumped there, it hasn't moved for three days and none of the neighbours know whose it is.
Someone saw it being parked up, the guy walked out of the street and there it's stayed, naturally some of the neighbours thought it was mine.....

so where do I stand with this, if it is genuinely abandoned how could I claim it for myself?
...although a sticking point is I have nowhere to store and strip it.

welcome any thoughts and advice, Thanks

Steve

yeah that's the weird thing, taxed until December, wouldn't normally raise eyebrows but this is a quiet cul-de-sac where everyone knows what goes on so definitely looks fishy to me.

on closer inspection it's in a pretty neglected state so wouldn't surprise me if it is dumped, not much on it that looks in top condition but there's bound to be some bits on it that are of use to people here

is it realistic that plod would hand it over in the event no-one wants it?

If the old law still stands: If you report it and it remains unclaimed for 3 months, then it's yours, complete with all accumulated costs incurred

i have recollections of being in a similar situation years ago, and if its abandoned, the local council get involved, and then the redtape gets unravelled!. No one will give you permission to remove the car, even tho' your doing them a favour?.

their stance would be what if the rightful owner turns up the day after you've taken it of their hands.

they don't want to open themselves up to litigation by taking a diversion from the standard route

i think as far as there concerned, if it's tax the council won't class it as abandoned till the tax has run out and if still insured don't think the police will be too interested

Unless you confirmed you are the owner how did you check?

It could be on a multi car policy or a trade policy...they do not show up on the data base.

Has someone actually rung the police?

Might want to be careful with all that Darren. Sound a bit like you are accessing stuff for a purpose which opens you well up to criticism

Steve - just a thought mate - about 6 months ago a similar thing happened where I used to live. It appeared that the owner was going on holiday and where they live they have to pay for a parking permit (also wasn't a good area). So, they came and parked it outside my house and then buggered off on holiday for 3 weeks. The neighbours weren't impressed, but as long as it's taxed, then they are not breaking any laws - not unless as Darren says they aren't insured? I also contacted my local Police - but they advised the car was taxed (and they did a check on the license plate and it was insured & mot'd too), so therefore the car hadn't been dumped.

Just something to bare in mind.

As much as it would be great to have Cougars falling from heaven, I expect WildV6 has a point.

And even if it's not insured, (that's not 100% clear apparently) the trouble is that you wouldn't be the first person to have a claim on it anyway.

Which to some degree is a pity in my opinion, whatever the car. It would be nice if people were allowed to look after a motor that was abandoned, but I suppose everything has a value and nothing comes for free.
