Early cougar

sorry to hijack this post but it is on topic..... my car has been on private plates from pretty much coming off the forecourt.... how do I find out the original number plate?

well I thought it did to start with Matt but my Dad who is old and forgetful cant remember if Colin was a few months old before putting his plates on.... so who knows lol I just wasn't sure if there was a site you could go to and put in the number plate now and it tells you the history of that car...

( don't look at his poorly MOT history :p )

That won't help anyway as he wouldn't have needed one for the first three years.

Is it not in the handbook or service book with your dad's details at the time he bought it?

My Passat was S866JRH from new - then the owner before me (the second) had a private number on it but when I bought the car it had reverted to the original.

I will double check when I get home.... I can not see another plate number so maybe it did come off the forecourt with Dad's plate on it..... cheers Matt :)

Stacey, the supplying dealer should have filled out the first page in the service history book with the original reg, VIN, engine, transmission, colour etc. Are you saying that this page is empty or incomplete?

hahah some would say as empty as my soul :D

Stacey, does it have the original standard radio in it?
One of the security features of them is the ability to enter the vehicle reg as an ID no. Maybe the original reg was used for that.

It does Andy, the only number I have for the radio is the 4 digit one to use when the battery is disconnected!! Its a flippin' mystery lol

If you have an audio manual it will tell you how to access the reg no if it's been entered as the Keycode, I'm afraid I can't remember off the top of my head.

.....although my display on my radio only works when Colin wants it to work :p Thank you :)

I remember. (y)

edit:
The Keycode is the 4 digit no. you enter to make the unit work.

You need to look for the VID (Vehicle Identification Number) as described in the audio handbook.

Or you could just disconnect and reconnect the battery. When it fist powers on it should display whatever was programmed into it before you enter the 4 digit code. That is, if the intermittent display is working lol.
But if the dealer never filled in the service book, chances are they did the same with the head unit.

S97 had this feature in the original stereo. I removed that stereo soon after purchasing the car but kept it in a cupboard upstairs, unpowered for the time i had the car, appx 6 years. When we did the S600 conversion, that stereo went back in to S97 and yes, the security feature was still there even after all that time. I had all original manuals as well for that car which included the audio manual with the code scribbled in. It was a few seconds of ignition and working fine again, even had Radio Mansfield pre-tuned. ;)

That is all both hilarious and impressive Al, including still being tuned to your local radio station!
