Front damper differences

its boring now to be honest.

It was funny first and even second time around, but now i think its a p*55 take.

I am considering merging this with the 'why bother' thread :)

Cut springs are contentious but it was in living history they were relatively common, there is no reason to use them in 2014, don't get me wrong but I guess with proper understanding of the mechanics then it's a second best way to lower a car? - It requires knowledge though, not hacking off two coils á là the kids in McDonald's car park with decked Saxos.

I know that there is a merit in a shorter strut with shorter springs, that isn't contentious.

cut springs are an absolute liability - and a pointless compromise when lowering springs are relatively inexpensive.
Why are they a liability? I'm not saying done "badly" they don't pose a huge risk but most modified cars until the 1990s has them and they didn't all fall off the road.

Like I said though, there is no reason to use them now.

Oh dear! What round is this then? I've been getting snippets on the phone but i'm now going to review this thread, in particular the post where ISG tells sunnycougar to leave!

sunnycougar, if you have a problem with me, just ignore, i didnt asked you anything, so you can just leave this thread, thanks

ISG, a couple of points:

You have asked for advice on several occasions in this section only to shoot any advice or suggestions down with an attitude which i find personally offensive and totally unreasonable.

Remember! you are asking for specific advice in the General info section which is covered in the subscriber sections.
Here at UKC we encourage a welcoming atmosphere to all new members, but to have that welcome thrown in our faces by ungrateful remarks to all who offer help and advise is just not tolerable. Maybe it's a translation thing, i don.t know, but if this attitude of yours persists, i see only one course of action.
I suggest you wind your unsubscribed neck in and try to be just a bit more reasonable in your responce to these helpful members.

DO NOT tell UKC moderators to ignore or leave your thread.

These very same moderators can remove your thread with no prior warning or reason.

BEHAVE! You should read this post as a warning to an infraction/ban.

hmm cutting springs and shortening dampers...do you have ditches on your roads over there cause i suspect you could end up in one..
the ends of springs are shaped(angled) so it sits in the seat correctly. by cutting it you will cause the seat to angle sharply not to mention the extra stress this will put on the shaft of the shock...and you are goin to shorten and rethread it...i doubt it'll be as strong as the machine at the factory did it...
no offence is intended but is it worth risking your life for a few mm...just do as relliot said and get lower fronts...tis good advice ya.

Maybe the spring cups will be modified too? Apparently fibreglass is stronger than metal, that should suffice :) Sounds like a killer modification that I can't wait to see ;)

Does anybody know what he's planning to do?

Seems to be a bit of the group "kick-in" mentality regarding something few actually understand.

You lot are funny sometimes.

How many on here are rolling around on no-name summer tyres which are not the correctly specified size for the vehicle?

And it matters to you because????

Its not group kick in as you put it, but the same person can only be told the same thing so many times (and ignore it) and then slag you off for giving the information (only to ignore it) before he gets a reaction.

This place is a great place to be, apart from the odd idiot. We are not all best of friends, some of us have polarised views on a lot of things, its not an inner circle. There is a certain amount however of mutual respect and a wealth of knowledge and direct experience. Which is useful.

Im surprised to to hear those advice from an auto enthusiat forum. How many of you actually had taken the strut apart? What kind of SHARP edges are you talking about? Only one side of the spring is flat, another is spinning "into the sky" and can be shortened with NO PROBLEMS. Further more, when you compress the spring before putting it back you can see that it would sit in those holders even if you would cut almost HALF OF IT, because it is damn longer than the strut piston. That would be a not smart to do (to cut a half of the spring), but it would HOLD even with the strut out of the car. And when being pushed by the weight of the car - it will have NO chances to slip out. Unless You are flying with both of front wheels in the air every day. Even then, the spring would be the last problem after landing on the ground. And you are telling me that to cut ONE coil is DANGEROUS. I then wonder what for You people is not dangerous in this life. Regarding modifying strut piston shortening after installing lowering springs: ahh... just do a research, and then tell me that is stupid and what is not... Regarding all advice to but a set of lowering springs - I HAVE A LOWERING SPRING KIT, and NEW shocks, but I want front to be a little lower, so stop telling me to but a lowering spring kit... If You have nothing to write about my question - PLEASE DO NOT WRITE anything. I'm not asking for your advice, I asked a concrete question.
As for the sunnycougar and his MODERATOR status - I wonder how did he got it in the first place, because JUST READ through this thread, all that guy is doing is talking off topic ********. And the funny part is that other members are giving him "THANKS FOR THE USEFUL POST. WTF?
When I joined this forum I taught I will get some ideas how to modify that and that, but now I see that 90% of the people here does not understand a thing about cars. And are just repeating the stuff they seen on the internet: "cutting springs is DANGEROUS", "repairing a small hole with fiberglass is DANGEROUS" etc, but actually have NO personal experience in those things... this is really pissing me off, so I just asked to leave this thread, and hoped that someone who actually has experience would write, but noooo, all of You are starting to flood my thread with ********.

As for the proof that Im not a some kind of modifying idiot, you all just can see the thread and pics of my car, and how clean and good my cougar is, and keep in mind that all the job was done by myself, so stop thinking that Im some kind of an idiot. https://www.dropbox.com/sc/uqrq69q6q570s0p/AADuH_oYrk8Q1pNfQixBkFT_a
