Yep, that may explain it, But i thought they had different part codes for the European auto boxes and the US ones..? but if not then it's just me OFS again...

See if the VSS for the new box will fit the loom plug and if the loom will stretch that far.
Sounds like you need a microcat reference. I don't know if you can search TIS with part numbers.
TC, ABS and it drops the ECU into recovery mode.
I'm sure the VSS on mine is on the back of the box and not near the drive shaft as that one above. Will the VSS off the old box not fit the hole on the new box maybe?
If it helps in any way, Chilton lists for a 99 Cougar :
Green and Red wire to VSS comes from PCM Power Relay, then White and Blue wire goes to Pin 58 on the PCM.
From that I'm gonna guess the W/BL is the signal from the VSS to the PCM and the R/G is the power in.
Might not be any use whatsoever but worth a mention if he needs to cut wires and change the plug or anything. What we may need here is C2 VSS wiring info to cross reference.
Not having the spindle might mean its broken. My VSS when it went was down to the original spindles being plastic and later being metal. A very common fault on the Cougar as it was a design fault.
Which could mean its more difficult to find a box. Just because they're the same year, doesn't mean they were built at the same time or with the same parts. Could well be that his car was on the line when they ran out of gearboxes and decided to use Contour boxes and looms.
Guys i'm pretty sure the slushbox on Dygs greenie has the VSS next to the driveshaft, as Si's does, its possible that Fraud have done their usual trick and swapped boxes mid 99, ala v6 donkey, they are quite good at this!!!! Sounds like the later box has the VSS next to the driveshaft
Thing is, the VSS with spindle, will give a different output as the other is a mag pickup, i know this cos we had to replace one
