MOT Fail

The C2 me and Mart bought cost £250

But the gearbox was knackered, the outside of the car was in a really bad way and it was absolutly riddled with rust.

But it did have some bits yours didnt such as the sunroof, a 3 part spoiler and the toyo manifolds

Around £250 - £400 depending on condition is about right IMO

Lucid, SPJMorris and I bought a C2 MOT failure some years ago for £300. Cosmetically okay, but rotten as a pear.

We didn't make a great deal of money back on it, but that wasn't the point. We bought it to get C2 parts for ourselves (which is where the profit would've been) and the rest was sold/given on to help other Cougars. As with yours, it was an utter basket case (body-rot, brakes, suspension, rear subframe, etc) so killing it was an easy choice.

This one sounds like you might make a decent car out of it if you have the time and skills, and I have every sympathy for dmc4708. It's a terrible decision to have to make. But whatever happens, I know that this club will treat him well.

That's why I wanted to ask here re what the car is worth to get a gauge of what a fair price would be, as I wouldn't want to be seen to be taking the p**s.

I can go and take some pictures of the car if anyone is interested. The car is drivable would need to be collected by trailer/transporter.

I also have some other parts which I have purchased over the years that I didn't get around to fitting which I can also offer for sale (probably warrants separate topics for each item?) - all parts are used unless otherwise stated;
-Shot blasted and powder coated rear subframe
-Blue flame exhaust
-Multiple USA Cougar badges
-Rear brake back plates (brand new)

If you wish to start a 'For Sale' thread for your car and/or any parts you have available please do so in the relevant sections of the forum. (y)

Grabbed some pics of the nearside sill and offside/nearside front suspension. From what I can see the front suspension looks more like surface rust rather than excessive corrosion as noted on the MOT?

Wow, the bottom of the wings have completely rotted off!

What are the sills like by the rear wheel arches?

Nearside sill looks scabby, offside looks ok? Also included some pictures of the arches.

Doesnt look that bad to be fair, new wings and a small patch on the front of the sill.

Although it looks like something nasty might be going on on the chasis rail further back in the picture ?

That NSF is not good at all (ignore the wings - they're not structural) but I don't think the actual chassis rail is affected. Or at least, not as far as we can see from here. What's rusting there is the bracket welded to it, which I believe is there solely for attaching it to a dolly when it was built.

Wheel arches are absolutely fine.

NSR sill isn't great, but again it's impossible to say without taking a tapping hammer to it. Might be nothing.

As for the suspension mounts, I feel pretty certain that a wire cup brush and a coat of Hammerite would sort them. But even if not, they're cheap as chips and take a couple of hours to swap out.

I hope this gives you some confidence that not all is lost, if you don't want it to be. And I will be there to help you if that's what you want.

TL;DR: I think a weekend of welding and some basic TLC would save this car, if you have the will and are prepared to sink some money into it. Economically I believe it would be viable, but only if you love the car enough to make the effort. Personally I wouldn't part it out.

Def saveable.
A weekends welding would see that sorted.
Wish I had the room, I do fancy a C2. Hens teeth job, actually prefer the C1 style, apart from the steering wheel.

I totally agree with you, Mabo.

There's loads of things that the C1 gets right - especially the nose - and loads of things that the C2 gets right. It's why I've spent some years building Tiger out to be a C1.5, (and I even sacrificed cruise control to get a C2 manual steering wheel). Only thing I'm missing is C2 front seats.

Anyway, I will either fix this car or I will buy it and fix it. Either way. I can't be Tony...yet...but that's where I want to be.

Maybe the next purchase I need to make is a welder and a load of sheet steel.

LOL Well, as off-topic we are with that, please consider me for first refusal my friend.

A flux core mig welder is good enough for most things car wise. Or at least my pigeon poo welding with one has passed many an MOT.
Started as you say with the welder and scrap metal.

C2 seats, I know they feel better than C1 but C1 seats are Cougar and in my humble opinion C2 aren't, I really like the C1 headrest.

There really wasnt a big difference in seats here making one a C1 seat and one a C2 My ebony C1 had the exact same seats as the C2 I just pulled all the parts out of friday. The C2 zetec next to it had the exact same seats as my silver C1 had. And then my grey seats that are in my ebony now are the same style as the C2 but are light grey and came in a C1. Here it was either you got leather or you didn't. The only real difference between C1 and C2 here is the color of the carpeting between the rear seats. C1 is grey C2 is black. Everything else is a crap shoot.
My red C1 has the seat style as the leather seats but covered in black cloth.

Dan, did you only get the rounded headrests on all your seat versions or did some have the rectangular ones we got on our C2?

We had these

And these.

There was no deciding factor saying this is a C2 seat and this is a C1 seat other then the carpet between the back seats.

However. I believe our actual C2 which was a specific model were black and blue.
The Zn I think was Black and yellow. We had a black and red model and then there were the 35th anniversary which had 35th anniversary embroidered into it.
It was all strictly a color thing not a seat type thing.
