 Hello to this Forum, having just bought my 1999 2.5V6 Cougar i am a newie !!
I took a chance a bought an MOT failure for a good price (too good to walk away from it),
to get it through it's MOT i have to change out the Rear Sub frame.
I've searched this forum and read some posts on the subject, has anyone posted a pictorial
or step by step to do it yourself ?
Also on the subject of do it yourself is there a manual in pdf format that can be downloaded ?
Thanks for reading my post.

Your best bet is to get TIS manual for ford it has all the stuff you need to know only a couple of quid off ebay. No one has done a how to yet but it will bo coming some time in the not too distant future. As one or two owners will changeing them soon.

And I'm one of them

A Mk2 mondy manual is the closest you'll get, from which this is taken:

Makes it sound so easy........

Thanks....sounds like an ok but knuckle busting job...if the sun is out tomorrow
will be my first job of the day.

LOL Haynes. Just... LOL

"Replacement is the reverse of renewal, though you should expect to bleed twice as much. Allow time to visit your local motor factor because sh*t is going to break the minute you spanner it, seriously."

I wouls add, be careful if the car is up on axle stands when you start to pull at the bolts, they are very tight and the torque used to undo the bolts will esaily pull the car off the stands, so brace yourself

Welcome to the forim btw. I will also be swapping my rear S/F soon.

BBTW! You might want to say an official "Hello" in the new owners section.

Be carefull of the bolts going into the chassis as they have been there for many years they can sieze causing the captive nut to dislodge an spin, happened to my cat with two of the bolts, then had to cut panels out in the bot to gain access to them

Yes will do....most likely will give them a soaking over a period of 1 week.

If you undo everything so that you can drop it out as in the picture you will find it easier

once you get it out as in the picture, soak every nut and bolt as these are very tight, also make a note of the radial arms angle as this needs to be duplicated as close as possible when you move them to the new subframe.

OK thanks for the pic. I removed the exhaust today and soaked all the bolts with + gas, so if the weather is good I will drop it out on Saturday. Can you give me a bit more on your note about making a note of where the radial arms are........what did you do / how did you mark it ? Thanks for all the info so far.

Message cougarbob he has galvanised rear subframes for sale also stainless tank straps which are worth changing at the same time

I didn't mark mine and now need to pay to have the rear end correctly set which I have been quoted £200 for as I also have lowered the car by 40mm, if your on a standard set up just get a marker pen or a paint brush and just mark on the old subframe the angle the 4 legs come off it from the middle out and then transfer it onto the new subframe, according to my Subaru WRC mechanic if your out my 1 or 2 mill it wont matter to much on a road car, mine is out by several centimeters so the back end feels like it has a live axle :-(

Rear sub Frame is out !!

 Just a short update to this thread (i started it so may aswell keep going) !!
I soaked everything to be undone with +gas over 3 days (whole can gone).
This morning i started at 09.00am & took near 1.5 hrs jacking the car up till
i was absolutely sure i was going to be alive at the end of it !!!!!!:(
By 12:00 it was on the driveway....all i gotta now is buy one & put it back !!
Only 1 ussue....i have 2 of picture 5 and i aint goota clue where they go ?
Can anybody help please...
Pictures attached for those who are going to tackle this porject, the best advice
i can give is use a whole can of +gas over several days and make damn sure that
motor don't come down on your head as some of them bolts needed a 3 foot
breaker bar to undo them.

looks good, thanks for this its very useful.
Those eccentric washers in pic 1 need to go back in as near as close to the same angle as you can get

you not got a replacement lined up? theres one for sale in the for sale section I think.

Oh! so thats where they came from, yes i have 2 of them.
I take it they sit behind the base of the suspension leg.
When it comes to putting the lot back, i'll take a few more pics
to so show where they should go.
This is a key point that will help others on the project.
Thanks Procomm
