Red C2 on Ebay

So, from info kindly provided by the person who owned the car 'from new'.....
It was a Cougar that was destined for Australia and ended up in UK via Germany.
As Andy says it has some interesting 'differences' from a standard UK model, clocks, oil filler cap etc..
The exhaust, badges, spolier, etc were specially ordered and fitted after purchcase.

It is indeed a rare and fascinating Cougar, and I look forward to sharing it with the Club,

cheers,

Wil

The other differences I noticed between Bruce and a standard C2 were:
the oil filler cap has 5w-20 embossed on it, the brake fluid cap has detailed info about which brake fluid to use instead of the generic brake symbol, heated screen but no heated washer jets and on the rear panel of the boot it has two PAIRS of tie-down eyes instead of the two single ones on the UK C2.
Each pair is made in one piece and fixed so the holes are one above the other and each eye has it's own square cut-out in the rear plastic panel.

I've taken a leaf out of Paul's (procomm) book and contacted Ford directly on the subject of what was actually done in Germany.
I emailed customer services in Koln and I'll post the email reply I had when I can get on my PC.

According to their Ford Expert the cars both LHD and RHD were completed at Flat Rock.
The gist of his quote is: 'all modifications were made before the cars left Flat Rock'.

Why would Ford ship components made in the U.S. and Mexico to Germany to put into vehicles they'd already sent down a production line?
The only thing I can think of that was probably fitted here were the headunits which were made in Portugal. The U.S. ones were made in Mexico.

The email I received from Germany:

Dear Mr. Houghton,

Thank you for your inquiry and the related interest in our brand. Unfortunately we have hardly appropriate documentation. Our research revealed that the SW164 Ford Cougar incl. RHD was built on the same line with its Mercury sibling in Flat Rock AAI.

All export content was fitted at the Auto Alliance plant.

We have asked a Ford expert for you. This is his answer:

“To my knowledge there were no modifications made when the vehicles reached the European shores. I cannot comment for Australian market, but I assume they were treated the same way.”

We hope that we could help you with this information.

Best regards,

It has always been my understanding that all vehicles left Flat Rock Mi. complete for the market they were destined for, apart from hearsay i've never seen any documentation or references in Ford literature re Germany, apart from it being the European registered company address/headquarters

Interesting info Andy, thanks.
So, in a way, this is Cougar 'history' updated, i.e. they were never 'assembled' in Germany, as you thought.

Re Bruce... I suppose you wouldn't need heated washers in Aus, and as yet I cannot find any fitted Roo bars lol!
This Cougar will be well looked after.... would be interesting to find out if there are any other 'Red' ones left in UK.

This one car seems to be bringing out so much info from Ford, more than they ever would give up a while back. There are at least two more in UK, a zetec for sure is kicking about somewhere on the south coast iirc.

Took a look at Wil`s red cougar today and its a lovely car, one to hang on to for sure, so glad Wil`s got it as he has been after one for a while and he is a lovely bloke full of joy about all things cougar. (y)

Hi,
I'm not sure exactly,
but I have a C2 UK sales brochure that was published in February 2001.

Ok that's interesting because mine was sold in December 2000 3 months b4 my c1 so I must Av one of the earliest c2 in the country cant wait for cougarfest to c my early c2 and ur late c2 togeather

All this leads to an interesting question: Just how much of the finishing of these cars was done in Germany?

I was always under the impression that clocks, centre console controls, lights and glass were all installed there. Looks like that might not be true.

I'd love to talk with someone who worked at Flat Rock.
there were 4 guys on NECO, if memory serves me correctly there was one guy who worked middle management and had a Cougar as a company car when they were released, the other 3 worked on the line, they were a mass of information back in the early days (y) I can't recall names though :(

IIRC Terry Hains was a Duratec V6 expert.

Just having a catch up on the forum, fantastic that this car resurfaced, great buy Wil. Think it was the same one that was a member briefly here many many years ago. Did try to buy it off him at the time but he wouldn't sell. Also wondered whatever happened to the concept copy car that was made by Christian, he got slated at the time but I did like that car.
