Red C2 on Ebay

From a brief conversation with the sales guy, it sounds like it may possibly be an import, I will try and speak to the previous owner for full details (luckily he had it from new!).
I missed a red C2 Zetec last year.
Just for interest, what was your job at Ford?

I was in Used Car Sales at a main Ford dealership. We worked closely with new car sales as we managed all the defleeted demos and part ex's against new cars.

Unless it specifically flags up an import marker, it'll be a car that had the RHD and ended up on a boat for the UK. The appearance pack would have all been US manifest as no official UK manifest existed for the red cars. That's why they came new with the US grilles etc. They weren't spec'd for UK sales so didn't get all the UK kit. Most were converted for SA and AUS however mistakes happen and some cars needed up here. From memory, I recall a director at Ford saying someone had to own up to 4 ship loads of cars landing in the UK that should have gone elsewhere. With that volume of cars, reshipping wasn't an option so Ford UK made the decision to just offer them as "dealer specials" or "limited edition" etc. That's why most red ones had an Essex reg. They came in to holding down in Essex. Cars of non UK spec often were registered to dealerships as demonstrators and then sold on later. Easier to sell what's in front of people rather than say "oh there's a red one available but it's not meant to be here". When they say 1 owner, it could be the V5 only shows one owner which could be Ford and then the registered keeper will show 2 previous owners when it changes to you.

All that said, it could be an import. If it's a factory RHD car, it won't be. Best bet is HPI the car yourself, you'll see if there's an import marker etc and any history you should be aware of such as insurance total loss, plate changes, VRM markers etc if it has any. If it has a clean report, happy days [emoji6]

Can't wait to see it in the flesh [emoji41]

Thanks, interesting info
I love the bit about 4 ship loads of cars ending up in the wrong place!
You must have seen it all working in used car sales at Ford.

I will know more soon. I can't collect the car for at least a week, but will try and get the dealer to give me the V5 details on Tuesday.
I wonder how many Laser red C2's are left in UK now....................
You are welcome to drop in anytime, are you coming to Fest here in July?

Thanks, will keep everyone posted about collection.
I am full on with the Malvern Show for next 10 days so things are a bit crazy at the moment!
But most importantly, if I had not received your txt, and others, about this special Cougar I would have missed it, so BIG thanks.

I'm not down for Fest. If I did, it'd be a fleeting visit perhaps for an afternoon. That said, middle of the summer is peak season for us so business first! I'm sure I'll see it at some point [emoji6]

It'll be as exclusive probably as the ebony you bought off Mike. That's a uniquely equipped car [emoji4][emoji1417]

Update on the Laser Red Cougar.

I put VIN Code into FordEtis:

Four interesting items, I would welcome any info on this, thanks

VERSION: Series 35

Drive: LHD FWD

Paint: Laser Red Tint C/C

Emission: With 49 State Emisssion Requirement

Cheers,

Wil

Kully (or Tracey, who was a Ford girlie at the time) will know better than me, but it does seem as though you've benefited from someone in Flat Rock getting it wrong.

For my part, I'm totally with you.

Hope it's awesome!

Just guessing-
California was/is subject to the most stringent emissions requirements first. So 49-state emissions must be the less-stringent in force at the time of sale ie. it would not have been legal to sell/register it in California.

I wonder therefore if the engine is non-interference as preferred over there, since European Cougars had interference engines.

Wil, Laser Red Tint was available in 2002:

Be interesting to see if it's it got the half-round sticker on the driver's side front strut turret.

Wil, are the first three digits of the VIN 1ZW and the last 6 numbers greater than 600,001 or is it WF0 and less than 599,999?

According to the info on the TIS disc the 'Series' for the Cougar should be 20 for the Zetec, 30 for the V6 and 50 for the ST220.

When you get to see the VIN plate, the figure in the box at top left under the 'Ford' badge, will denote LHD or RHD:

1 or A for LHD, 2 or B for RHD.

The paint code is in the 6th box down on the left hand side of the plate and should be BA for Laser Red Tint.

Build date is 23/10/2000, according to FordEtis
You may have noticed there is a Cougar head badge on left of driver's footwell.
Also appears to be a 'button' on right of steering wheel, not sure what this is,don't have one on my other C2 Manuals.
Blimey, I need to get this car back here!

The Vin Code is WF0 and less than 599,999
Will have to wait to see Vin Plate for rest of info
Many thanks for your input, much appreciated.

WF0 denotes a Ford vehicle written down to Ford Werke A.G. Germany (European vehicles) as oppose to one written down to Ford Motor Company, USA which would have the other figures.

Production nos. less than 599,999 are Fords, over 600,001 are Mercurys.

as discussed here on another car.....took a while to find this old thread! :)
https://forums.ukcougar.club/threads/21406-Identification-plate-on-strut-housing

That was a rectangular riveted-on plate on Sam's greenie which I think turned out to be of Aussie origin.

Manos mentioned the half-moon US sticker in post no.4. of that thread. (y)

From buikd date 23/10/2000 to UK registration 09/2002 is 22 months.
DVLA rules are such that a car cannot show a plate suggesting it is "newer" than its first use, and an "import" would be assigned an age-appropriate plate, so suggests it was in Ford's system for all that time.
