Nothing I will take credit or blame for but this could maybe, very maybe, do us some financial good.

Petition: Reduce Vehicle Excise Duty by 50% for vehicles aged 20 to 39 years

Introduce a 50% VED reduction for cars aged 20–39. High taxes force functional vehicles to be scrapped, creating a "disposable" culture. Keeping existing cars is greener than building new ones, as it preserves embedded carbon. This "Young-Timer" bracket supports the circular economy and UK heritage.

To be honest the science is there for all to see, keep cars going longer and improve existing ones not make new ones, the government knows this but they ignore it because of pressure from car companies who want to keep churning out new cars and the simple fact the government can make money by taxing older cars more with an environmentally unsound agenda, remember the scrap your petrol car and buy a diesel fiasco, thousands of perfectly good cars scrapped because the government said diesel was better for the environment which was totally untrue, the push for battery electric cars will end up the same way, thousands scrapped because they know making batteries and disposing of them is bad for the environment.

Our village mech, who does seem to be the ultimate pessimist, is convinced new ICE cars are built with a 5 year life expectancy. Largely due to the cost of replacement parts and technology when they fail being greater than the value of the car.
He has a valid viewpoint and the daily experience of the problems / cost so it’s not easy to disagree with him.

You only have to look at how mobile phones have shifted from being able to swap out batteries to sealed in ones to see we have gone from fix and keep things going to just dumping
