Nothing I will take credit or blame for but this could maybe, very maybe, do us some financial good.

To be honest the science is there for all to see, keep cars going longer and improve existing ones not make new ones, the government knows this but they ignore it because of pressure from car companies who want to keep churning out new cars and the simple fact the government can make money by taxing older cars more with an environmentally unsound agenda, remember the scrap your petrol car and buy a diesel fiasco, thousands of perfectly good cars scrapped because the government said diesel was better for the environment which was totally untrue, the push for battery electric cars will end up the same way, thousands scrapped because they know making batteries and disposing of them is bad for the environment.

Our village mech, who does seem to be the ultimate pessimist, is convinced new ICE cars are built with a 5 year life expectancy. Largely due to the cost of replacement parts and technology when they fail being greater than the value of the car.
He has a valid viewpoint and the daily experience of the problems / cost so it’s not easy to disagree with him.

You only have to look at how mobile phones have shifted from being able to swap out batteries to sealed in ones to see we have gone from fix and keep things going to just dumping 😕

Considering modern cars are subject to millions of miles of testing both on the road and on computer it beggars belief they have such catastrophe faults that send them to scrap

I wonder how much testing has shifted from real-world to computer modelling.
And even real-world cannot accelerate material aging.

I truly love all the chat around cars, it’s great the way these threads wander and I for one welcome that, but can I draw the attention of anyone interested in reducing the cost of keeping our older cars on the road to please take a look at the link at the top of this thread.

And then come back here and chat some more. 😀

Is it just a business model ?
Why design cars to last 10 years when you are in the business of building new cars, If it’s too costly to repair at 6 years old then most buyers will let their 2020 car go and take on the finance ( more profit to the seller) and drive out the showroom in a new one.

And even if they don't, maybe they take on a 5yo cast-off, there's still someone in the chain seeking to replace with new.

Whilst waiting to pay for tracking in our local tyre place recently I heard one half of a telecon. Someone seemed to have been told by the main dealer his Porsche tyres were in need of replacement.

“No there isn’t a budget option in Porsche tyre sizes, we can only give you a premium cost.
If you bring the car to us we can take a look and tell you if you need tyres”

I actually laughed aloud when I heard this. Porsche and “budget tyres” seems to me diametrically opposed.

It seems Mr Porsche was now afraid to drive his Porsche in case he got pulled for tyres.

“Obviously no guarantees but the chances of getting stopped for ANYTHING whilst you driving sensibly around here is Zero”

He was given a price for 4 tyres at just over £1000.00. This was 2 different brands due to diffent front rear sizes and Mr Porsche wanting count the pennies.

My thought was I’m running a 25/26 year old car ( or 2 ) and try to keep it on tyres I feel comfortable with whilst on a tight budget and still keep ‘em all the same , if I had a Porsche she would definitely have 4 same brands.

Some punters will believe anything the main dealers tells them. I’ve heard SO many conversations.
Car booked in for pads. “ You need discs too” I’d give firkin good money they don’t.

And there in lies the problem, alas our privileged society has reached the stage where 90% of the drivers don’t have a clue about the box they are sitting in.

One of the local dealers has a used manual Cayman on his forecourt for £15K, it’s forking gorgeous and very tempting. BUT, can I keep it in Tyres ? However that’s a little off thread. 🙄
