Well that's my cat set up on dd for road tax £25.02 for first month then £24.93 a month there after bye bye road tax disc

Mike you pay for 12 months and they add 5% for the privilege of paying by DD.

There is the option to pay a lump sum for 6 months or for 12 months also by DD.
The 6 month lump sum also attracts the 5% surcharge.

Mike, I've got Karen's renewal in front of me now and they are the options although the six months lump sum via DD including the 5% is still a couple of quid less than the 'normal' 6 month lump sum.

Hmm, do we all have the same amount here? Do cougars after 1st March 2001 pay more or less?

Mine is due and these are the options I have:

Payment card
6 Months at £126.50
12 Months at £230.00

Direct Debit

Monthly (approximately £20.13 per month) totalling £241.50
6 months (one off payment) at £120.75
12 months (one off payment) at £230.00

£25.02 + (11 x £24.93) is £299.25, a lot more than any of those??

Anything first registered after 1 Mar 2001 will, indeed, sit in the higher tax bracket, even if the car is identical. The newest Cougar you can have on the old rates is an X plate.

I must be missing something here, my tax was £126 for 6 months under the old system, Andy is saying that his is £25.02 for first month then £24.93 a month there after, so that comes to £299.25 for 12 months or £149.67 for 6 months
Has there been an increase in tax that i dont know about ?

According to .GOV it's still £230(£126.50) for vehicles registered before 01/03/2001.

Assuming Andy's is registered after that date and falls into the 201-225CO band then the figures he's quoted are correct: £285.00 + 5% = £299.25

My Road tax for this year on the Isle of Man was £336.00, for a 2000 V6. No option to pay by DD and no 6 month option here either. I would have thought they would have given you a discount for DD as there are less admin costs. Strange....

The DVLA have basically given themselves an extra 5% tax revenue as surely most people will now go for the direct debit, as you can never be sure how long you're going to keep a car. Having to cash tax in is otherwise just one more thing to think about when selling up.

That being said, my inner cheapskate doesn't want to give the DLVA the extra 5%, so when it comes to renewal I don't know whether to go for DD or pay it in full for a year.

I have just received my renewal from DVLA and if I tax it for 6 months, as I usually do now, I will have to pay £156.75 ( newer reg so higher tax band also ) but, if I pay by direct debit, I will only pay £149.63 in a one off payment or £299.25 if I tax it for 12 months.

Can anyone in the UK actually justify what this is for? The roads are terrible and full of pot holes so it can't be used for fixing them. The light bulbs in traffic lights seem to be out in about 1 in 5 lights I passed and then when you're in London you have to pay tax again just to drive though it. I've been reading about this more and more with the removal of the tax disc and it seems you ALSO pay on fuel (which is what the rest of the EU do) so now I see they're charging 5% for the fact you're actually paying them money...
