Running a Cougar as a third car (in a house of two)

Thanks for the reply chaps.

Yes, as far as i have been led to believe it's just the blower, all else is fine (initially I thought it was the a/c that had died). For some reason I thought you needed a demister for the MOT so that's a good bit of news!

I'll look into it for you, but that's only ever going to be a motor, wiring or fuse.

Morning all.

Browsing Amazon looking at battery chargers for the weekend (new battery, but flat through lack of use) and aside from wishing I'd have picked up a Lidl special some months ago, I'm wondering if the 12v socket in the Cougar is live when engine off? If so I'll get an adapter too for the trickle charge and maintenance.

TIA

yes it is. mine is anyway. Those cheap little battery tender brand battery maintainers are a good choice for cars you dont drive alot.

Cheers Rooster, I'll add the adapter to the bundle then.
I had one of these on Jane for the longest time. You can wire it directly to the battery with no serious issues.

Balls.

So the new battery is so flat, the charger won't touch it. Off for a set of jump leads now to see if we can breathe life in to it.

Fingers crossed chaps, MOT booked for 1030 in the 'morrow.

So it failed.

Excessive play in both front suspension arms (bushes) and rear arb offside bush. So what are my options chaps? Garage seems to think I'm on to a non starter, however I disagree. Can I get bushes and get them pressed in, or is it a new pair of arms?

Any advice or options gratefully received!

Arms are fairly cheap anymore. I'd just replace them and be done

Thanks for that, certainly my thoughts. Since posting I've agreed to source the parts and send them to be fitted. I suspect as he knows the car he thought I was going to want all sorts of parts sourcing not simple things.

Anyway, another quick one. I've had the drivers door card off as we have no power window. I've found a green socket with no relay inserted. Anyone know what this is? I'll try and upload a picture...

relay socket in the door I would say Auto down relay.
there should be an Oblong hole it reaches to with a screw hole on both sides. It's the relay that makes the window go down by itself. Since it wires into the down wire that could be a reason the window doesnt go down.

Cheers Rooster, I wondered what it's function was as it clearly connects to the switch and motor. So should it have a relay in or have Ford left it dangling? I certainly wasn't fastened with screws although I'm away from the car again now for a fortnight so won't be able to check.

Actually had a nice afternoon getting to know the car and figure out the faults and devise a plan of action. I'll start a new car thread I think as it's clearly growing away from new owners now. And yes, I'll be joining up too when I can be botehred to look for my wallet; that might be in the morning now.

Sorry it took a bit, I had to find time to look in my doors. Now then, I apologize ahead of time if this gets long. What the relay does is form a physical break in the Down wire for your window switch. It's a specific relay. It's not like the little square black ones in our fuse box. It's a larger relay with two arms sticking off to each side with screw holes through them. 191667007162_1.jpg Mine looks like the pic. I've never taken one apart to really inspect how its made but. It's basically a timer built into a relay sort of thing. The Down wire from your window runs through it, and it Connects the circuit for a certain amount of time when its activated Crazy stuff. On Luci I had one of those spliced into my passenger door as well so both of my windows did the auto down function. As well as you can do the exact same aspect and add an auto up function to our cars. You just need a relay like that for each function. so 1 for up 1 for down on each door totaling 4. If your car is missing that little box in your door then your window shouldn't roll down. after pulling the trim panel if you look behind where the controls on the door card are, In the sheet metal of the door there's an oblong hole that's in both doors. There's a screw hole on each side upper side of the hole. That's where the relay mounts. You're driver door should have the relay socket with the hole and supposed to be a relay mounted in the hole plugged into that socket. If you take the door card off of the passenger side, You should still see the oblong hole but no wire harness connector. I would suspect that if you got the relay and plugged it in your window will work. I'm hoping I didn't loose you and that I answered your question. If not then Yes. Yes It should have a relay in it. and No Ford did not just leave it dangling.

Thanks for such a detailed response Rooster, that's excellent stuff. I'm left to assume the garage have retained / lost / forgotten about the relay then so that'll need replacing.

Basically my father in law took it to a garage to get a quote for work (window stopped working, blower gone, aircon stopped etc etc) but the quote, unsurprisingly, came in at a fortune. The decision was it was uneconomical to repair and was left to potentially go the scrappies, so I guess the missing relay is a result of their 'diagnostics'.

I'll add a relay to the list!
