Vehicle tax changes - effective Oct 14

Interesting developments like someones said now what we gonna have in our tax disc holders lol
On a side note due to my Personal Independence payment claim due to being slightly disabled thanks to the cancer I could have one of our car's registered as "disabled" and claim a free tax disc, not sure how this will work now if you don't actually display anything on the screen?

(in answer to the 1st question we are a member of a camping club so their membership disc can go on display now I guess)

the vehicle itself is registered as disabled and therefore tax exempt.

Any subsequent owner will have to apply for the vehicle to be re-registered as plg and will be liable for their own road tax

The only way that you'll get your tax back is to sorn the car before you sell it because reading the notes on selling you automatically lose any tax remaining.

I couldn't find this? Could you point it out to me?

I can't see it's that much different to the current system, once you peel away the bluster:

1) You'll be able to pay monthly, and won't have to remember to renew VED at its anniversary on your vehicle.

2) You'll be able to lay-up your car and just stop paying for it, as said ideal for those who have more than one vehicle, no more paying duty on a vehicle that spends eight months of the year under a tarpaulin in the garage.

3) You won't have to wait for the Post Office to open, or stand in a queue whilst some mouth-breather behind the counter asks you to fill in yet another form.....

4) You won't be able to sell a vehicle with paid-duty in place, whilst that's a touch annoying I can't think any other way it could be done... Would you want to suddenly have a direct debit go out in eight months for a car you sold six months previous?

5) From what I understand the VED can be left on the vehicle until such a point there is a change of keeper, the previous keeper will be able to apply for a full-month pro-rata refund, exactly as it is at present. I didn't think people really sell cars with VED anyway, I certainly never include tax with a car sale, unless it's bought as a separate item for face value.

You didn't have to do that anyway. Put a 6 month ticket on it, & claim a full month or two back if you wanted to.

www.gov.uk/taxdisc :)

Which has saved me a lot of hassle since they thought of it.

Yep i always do mine online these days, its sooo easy now, what bothers me about this new idea is it'll be easier for them to put it up come budget day, if your paying by DD it'll sneak up and you won't notice it,

But then perhaps once the Coug is over a certain age it'll be classed as "classic" and we'll be tax exempt...

Waiting..... waiting....... waiting

Oh what's it like to be so clever?

It doesn't state either way but it does say that the tax is void upon sale and doesn't mention refunds

Remind me how effective this is on the Sunday you purchase a car

Don't get 'pissy' because you've misinterpreted something?! Saw your initial reply by the way.

Good, you were meant to you tosser.

Cheer up ya grumpy fecker

Surely the website zarquon linked to is open on a Sunday?
Oh it is, but surely it's only effective to the owner who is currently registered, plus the five days 'grace' I think only applies on renewal of a disc so unless you want to wait for the bit of paper to arrive in the post it's still only as quick as the paperwork takes to process?

No, not generally.

But I wouldn't advertise it as being included either, depends what it was though, if it's only a few days with then I wouldn't care, would I sell a £500 smoker with £120 with of VED in the window? Probably not.... Think I sold the erstwhile Cougar as being taxed?!

Generally I don't though, especially if I sell through eBay or to a trader as an in trade vehicle can no longer be accepted for a VED refund anyway. On eBay I always start from 99p and state in the listing any remaining VED can be bought for face value.

What have I done?

With all due, what have I actually done that's upset people except suggest maybe this isn't such a dreadful thing and clarify a few points? I can't see how I chose to buy or sell the of banger is really anybody's issue to take great offence to either?

I have been quite peripheral for a year or so but every time I come on here, if I read something from you, I seem to read something from you that is inflammatory, there are people with many years experience of working on the cars or just knowing the answers to the questions through being present and learning the answers from people that know. But you put people down as though they don't matter or what they have to say isn't important at the side of your greater knowledge. Some of these people are friends of mine and I've had a lot of good times with them, I've helped them, they've helped me. It's what the foundations of this club are built on. To see those people belittled is not nice. Nobody knows everything, even after 10 years of cougar ownership I don't know everything, but I am still willing to listen. Sometimes we should all pin our ears back and keep our mouth shut, we may even learn something.
