What Have You Done to Your Cougar Today?

...Exactly what I thought...but it isn't...got confirmation of this: videohttp://tinyurl.com/ydd8bq26

...no idea why they decided to alter it...maybe it's considered to be more secure - I prefer not fit radios in too well, otherwise the wretched scrotums that steal them destroy the dashboard to get it...

Very odd. The ones in your video link are US versions, the later example has a radio/cassette/cd HU which wasn't available over here.
Numerous people, me included, have swapped their C1 radio surrounds for the C2 version and no mention has been made of having problems with fit when putting the HU back in.

As to my none fitting fuel tank strap. I removed the passenger side one, rebent it as per the one removed. Started at the hole end and worked to the waisted end. Difference in length is around 1 1/4 inch. I cut the end off with the angle grinder, mole wrench locked the off cut onto the remaining end and then reshaped the end to match the clamped on off cut with the angle grinder. Refitted to car, tank now secure.
Today I added some mounting tabs to my petrol filler pipe cage to pick up the original mountings and once the welds had cooled gave them some hammerite to protect it.
My rebuilt subframe was then jacked into place and the 4 new mounting bolts refitted. Next job is to rebolt the hanging suspension uprights to the suspension arms but probably need to source new bolts first.

Maybe Ford/Mercury retooled the console for LHD C2s and contemporary US spec headunits but the fewer RHD C2s and European headunits continued with only the console colour changed.

...A photo' of mine as requested...I think I see the difference, I have no holes because they're in the radio, not the dash...I'll blame my confusion on old age... :(

Its an aftermarket one.

See around the actual stereo there is a black rectangle panel..that will prize forward with a screwdriver, then behind that is where you can stick your removal tool

With that one you may need the flat removal tool rather than the one with two points on it

That looks more than likely but their later, 'squarer' headunits still retained the 2 x 2 prong release mechanisms.

Very nice, cruise with manual, blue (body colour) dials and HU, sports pedals and footrest; US got the options.
Since 2001 C2s in UK spent a long time in the delivery chain, and in US were available until 2002, is possible that the HU shape change didn't occur in time to affect export models. IIRC even LaserRed has the rounded corners.

These removal tools are listed for Kenwood KDC-BT models:

Yes, I imported a set of those dials because I liked the colour so much.
I think your earlier point about the shape being changed for the US version is more likely but it would be interesting to see what the last Aussie ones were fitted with as they were available there until 2004.

Sizable week for Rana.

Snuck through the MOT on Friday, ordered new tyres for some new alloys yesterday, and got filthy with a very botched rustproofing session today.

Want to give her a good clean and take a snap when the new wheels are on!

Rebolted the suspension bars to the uprights, with the old bolts for now. Refitted the wheels and fitted timber blocks underneath them to keep the car in the air. I was then able to remove some of the other temp supports to enable better access to re fit the heat shields, exhaust system etc.
So she's now back on 4 wheels, just with the back end jacked up.

£100 alloys are on and I'm really chuffed with them. I hope they stand the test of time!
