What Have You Done to Your Cougar Today?

The body kit is the MS designs one ,i believe it was a ford option- i managed to get mine of Lucid but they do come up for sale every now and then

Had a funny feeling it was the Ford option one, just needed confirmation (y) i had a look on ford ecat recently and as suspected are no longer supplied :( not even a dusty one lurking in the back of a parts dept in the out reaches of the galaxy :( :([/QUOTE]

I was lucky enough to get the last front skirt of 10 a bloke not far from me obtained when he bought a warehouse full of Ford spares.

Lucky man...

Well took on the oil change today , although rumoured to be easy , didn't go altogether that smoothly but thankfully got there in the end :)
Had all my stuff lined up , oil , filter , rubber gloves(oh kinky) , chain wrench , replacement sump nut(thank god I got a new one on recommendations) and... A 15 mil socket... Those who know , know what is wrong with the above , yes the socket doesn't fit as the exhaust bend won't allow for space so had to get car back down off ramps and go to halfords , missus was in work and had my credit card and I had a fiver in my pocket... Got to halfords and was a quid short on the money required for spanner... Rarrrr so went to counter told the guy my predicament so he went through tool box and thankfully found me one and sold it me for 2 quid.. Winner.
Got back home , got car back up on ramps got under put spanner on(only had the teeth side as the round side was missing the adapter as it was some kind of multi tool)
Went at it... Slip.. Nut rounded on one side tried the next.. Slip , rounds again *gulp* last chance salloon , thought *"ck it , go for it , done little squirts of tension and thankfully broke the grip(yayy) popped off and replaced with new nut and filter change.
Jobs a good en.
Cabin filter replacement if it comes tomorrow and have a go at that #%&£%& tow ring if the d shackle comes , got the WD specialist spray for releasing nuts so fingers crossed.

Thanks mate, having the correct tools is essential as you know!
Will pop there tomorrow for them as I don't fancying scratching paint off bonnet!(I need torx also but I cheekily found that having the right flat head does the job of unscrewing them) cheeky cheeky.
Just hope I can get that bloody tow ring off lmao , will post celebratory pictures when that forking thing is removed!!

Nice easy job to ease you into the world of car maintenance - now crack open a cold one - as is tradition

for that pollen filter - go back to Halfords and grab these...
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_530589_langId_-1_categoryId_165572

as they make removing the outer screw on the scuttle a doddle, are handy to have in your toolkit, and cost a measly three quid (y)

Handy tool to have at hand. I've had one them since aworralad back in toad-days. Iirc it's a Rabone Chesterman, none o this cheap jap muck

jeeezzz the trials of the home mechanic never seem to go smoothly, glad you got it sorted in the end fella, this is one of the reasons i do very little these days even with all the tools its still knuckle skinning PITA job to work out side on the car

Thanks guys , just wish I had a big snap on trunk full of proper tools , I wouldnt have encountered the rounding off nut else wise or the travelling to halfords , but as you know , even crappy tools cost money , my dad used to have loads he collected over the years but he borrowed them out to unsaviory characters and a nephew who didn't bother returning them and doesn't have many tools left now.
He could have donated them to me!

Ok today got my d shackle(15mm) and new cabin filter through post... First off that forking tow ring that made me scuff my front bumper!!
Pay attention if you have same problem , when I got car some previous owner(tit) had left the tow ring in to set hard with rust in a place it is impossible to turn off(cougar front bumper) so after trying to no avail with hammer and chipping paint off my front bumper!! Rarrr , I was ready to give up but I consulted on here , bought some WD specialist penetrive spray , ordered a d shackle and
Yessss done the bar steward..
On to the cabin filter removed everything I had too, to get at it and found this..

Darker than heavy rock music , replaced and hoovered out , done the car interior whilst at it, so all done for today , a/c top up at end of month and wheels in a few more months , than I'm happy till my mot is due again(hopefully) lol.
Brew time now , knackered!!

Lol I don't think any rust is left on it mate(my old tow ring) I sprayed that much penetrive spray on it. It melted it all away!
Though if you have a perfect unblemished leather drivers heated seat hanging around I'll take that! :)
Got a wear on it , and for what it cost to repair may as well look out for a unblemished replacment! Just not got any money ATM! :-(
Ordering a mint gear stick gaiter replacement next week as I noticed a small rip in the front of the one in my car todaywhen cleaning the interior, and I need that cap still for under the bonnet catch... Nearly there with the outside, now I have to start interior work! , these cars love money being spent on them mate! Lol.

I'd hate to think how much a tvr requires money wise (if bits go wrong) same boat as a cougar in a way as tvr are no longer made? Or are replacement parts still readily available jamie?

The Cougar was never really a problem for me. It must have been 2006 or 2007 when my first went. You could still get everything from the main dealers. I was only fairly modest money at the time so it still stung. Never a problem getting anything - it wad just paying for it!

The TVR is ok to be honest. The chassis is the only thing that can rust and it's just made from standard sized tubes. Bushes are readily available. Balljoints were specials but still manufactured. Most electrical stuff such as wiper motors, coil packs etc came from mainstream cars. Specialised control modules are all serviceable by cottage industry companies. The engines even are pretty much fully supported. I know a guy who very unluckily broke a crankshaft recently and had to wait a few months to get a new one machined from a billet at great expense. The TVR engines are obviously quite expensive to rebuild - i.e. around £7k, which is still half what it costs if your Porsche 996 or 981 suffers IMS bearing failure and lunches itself.

General wisdom is to budget for £2~3,000/year on top of fuel and insurance to run.

Discs and pads are expensive, but last a long time as the car is light and engine braking immense. Clutches and slave cylinders for everything with the TVR engines are tiny diameter things assembles into twin plate packs to cope with the torque but without a big heavy flywheel. The clutch lasts around 30k and costs £900 these days. The slave cylinder is a special too and hydraulically seals with the bellhousing. They're crap, and cost £300. The earlier Rover V8 powered cars had normal clutches and brakes and are generally much cheaper to run. Not far off Mondeo money actually. It's just when they went mental with the Cerbera and later that things got pricey. Being almost as fast as supercars wasn't enough - they wanted to humiliate the 993 Turbo and Diablo. Their in-house engines are wonderful, but they killed the company. Nobody the size of TVR can afford their own range of engines. At one point they had 8 variants of engine in production.

Windscreens can be hard to get. Bodywork wise obviously they don't deteriorate as they're GRP. They do get crashed though but there's a geezer in the midlands with moulds for the front and back halves of all of them so he can make any repair sections you're ever likely to need should you run out of talent!

hey guys on the subject of super cars , did you guys see the new Porsche hybrid on top gear the other week? Man if it was a choice between the p1 and the new Porsche , it would be a hard decision , I didn't think it would be , but the new Porsche hybrid did impress!(sorry for taking thread off subject!) What would you guys have? The new Ferrari looks awesome also(have you heard the sound of it!?) , man if only I had a few million put to the side... Ha.
