What Have You Done to Your Cougar Today?

That looks absoluty stunning, she has obviously had alot of hard work into her!

out of curiosity, what wax do you do use? Might be a daft question is wax better than polish?

Cheers Ricky, she's a labour of love. I use Meguiar's wax, currently the Gold Class liquid wax. Wax isn't better or worse than polish, it's a different product. I usually cut the car with paint cleaner (basically a mild t-cut), polish it and then wax it, obviously buffing it between each product. I was running short of time today though, so went straight from the paint cleaner to the wax.

There are no daft questions.

A polish is designed to gently skim the paint and remove small scratches or swirls. It will also remove "bonded contaminants" (tree sap and such). You apply a polish and then remove it completely. It's sort of the equivalent of toothpaste.

A wax is a glossy, protective layer that is applied last. Although it looks like you're putting it on and taking it off again, you're actually leaving a residue behind. That residue (mostly caranuba wax) fills any remaining scratches, and stops acid rain and other rubbish in the atmosphere from attacking your paint. It also makes water bead off the car.

If you're new to all this, there's loads of resources I can recommend to you. I also have occasional detailing days and you're more than welcome to come along if you like!

That would be awesome if you didnt mind :) I would love to know how to actually do it properly rather than guessing :)

Sure thing! Walsall isn't a million miles away, so we should probably make a day of it sometime.

I don't have one planned at the moment - they're kind of "as-and-when" but I'll set something up and see where we go from there.

If nothing else, it looks like you're going to be at 'Fest,so I will be sure to bring along a full (mixed) cleaning kit. You can learn what techniques and products work for you, and we can give you an excellent base to start from. You have a Melina, so I'll beg Tracey to bring along her pot of Blue Velvet. Shirtyzeus will tell you what that stuff is like...

So I stripped back last year's wax, gave her a deep wash, clay, and then gave her a wax by hand.

By hand?! Yeah. I applied Poor Boy's Natty's Paste Wax using my fingers, as Mike suggested. This was brilliant advice from him. You can feel any defects and you reduce the possibility of scratches.

So this is an interim treatment - I'll be using Blue Velvet next time. I need to sort out the milky donor bonnet first though.

This.

Damn, that looks nice.

I've got a close friend who's been offering to spend a day giving my Coug a good clean/clay/wax for over a year now. It looks like we've finally got some coinciding time off work in July so I'm gonna take him up on it. If it ends up looking half as good as yours does I'll be well happy (y)

Thank you so much! She's not perfect (yet) but I love her.

That's a good friend. Getting your car up to scratch is hard work. Really hard work. And if you're not exhausted by the end of it, it's not good enough.

Sounds like he knows what he's doing, but I'd like to hear what products he uses if that't okay? We all approach this differently.

Looking good Chris!

Thank you, Wil.
