Just for quick reference to you all in UkCougar.com land, I thought it might be a good idea if I laid down the differences between the C1 and C2
Basics
Cougar 1 (C1) available from 1998 - 2001 (although late registered C1's still available up to 51plate in 2002) over 11000* sold in UK IIRC :sosp:
V6 24v# [Manual or Auto]
2.0L 16v Zetec [Manual]
Cougar 2 (C2) available late 2000/2001 - 2003 [Xreg - 52plate] 440 sold in UK*
V6 24v# [Manual or Auto]
2.0L 16v Zetec [Manual]
[*figures taken off this site, not official]
Also known as the Cougar "Face-lift" model......Ford would have made the ST200 Cougar as a C2, it even appearers in the C2 drivers manuals.
C1 came in 4 colors: Blue (Blurple) Silver (Silver-frost), Black, Green (Tourmaline) [although it might have been also in another blue shade too IIRC]
C2 only available in 3 colors initially: Black, Silver (silver-frost) Green (Amazon) [however at least two official C2's have been spotted in Red & Blue (Trophy Blue like St220) and there is a yellow one kicking about]
#In late 2000/early 2001 the engine size of the V6 was dropped from 2544cc to 2495cc, one can only guess why NB: not all C1's have the larger engine fitted!#
Specific Differences: Between C2 and C1
Engine Rocker cover on V6 is different on the 2495cc engine, the oil filler cap is a twist-bayonet item (threaded on C1) the Ignition coil pack mounts to the rear rocker cover using 3 bolts (4 on a C1) !
{please note due to the CC differences the two V6 engines will be different in other areas I'm not privy to at this time}
Rear Suspension The rear suspension top-mounts on a C2 are of a different configuration to the C1, and therefore when lowering the C2, C1 top-mounts must be used as most if not all after market suspension set-ups were designed on the C1
Items needed for change: Gaiters, Top-mounts, bumpers [see relevant thread]
Bodywork The C2 is actually based on the original Mercury MC2 concept from 1997
And even the legendary "Cougar-S" concept carries C2 esc design features [C2 style front headlamps]
The front bumper is of a different design to the C1 in that the lower grill has slats not a large meshed air intake, also the front fog-lights are of a different design (more efficient also) The upper grill is also different in the fact that it is full (IE. there are no ends cut off) and is of a diamond mesh effect similar to the Mondeo Mk3/Focus Mk1/2
also the front headlamps have a completely different set up. Projector style lamps for dipped beam, small side-light bulb incorporated into the main-beam reflector. [H7 Dipped beam 55w, 9005 Bulb for main beam 60w] there is also provision for a US running light, with its own reflector.
{US cars have AMBER reflectors for both the indicator & running lights, UK cars have clear reflectors and use AMBER bulbs instead}
excuse the size
Apart from the front the bodywork is the same as the C1. Although US C2's have a slated rear bumper (were the infill panels are now fitted on most owners cars) and a SQUARE number plate recess.
Interior The C2 seats are of a different design to C1's having slightly more padding and deeper side bolsters, the color of the leather seats is also different (darker, ebony black) Fabric seats have a different pattern in the C2 to C1 also. Rear seat design is identical just trimmed accordingly
The dashboard uses darker materials on the C2 for the HVAC panels/Light switch panel and the curved panel above the dials/center vents is of a non-slip feel (not unlike the mondeo Mk3). HVAC controls on the V6 C2 have silver accents and the dials have silver surrounds (the dials are actually silver like the ST170 focus) Front speakers benefit from bright surrounds and the gear knob has a bright insert as does the hand brake release button. [Image from C2 official brochure]
The parcel shelf in the rear is of a different design also.
Wheels C2 wheels are 16" six-spoke shod with 215/50 16 tires, another different design to the C1
For comparison a C1 on the left and C2 on the right.
