Windscreen side moulding clips

Hi all, new member so any advice would be much appreciated.

I drive a 2001 v6 and a couple of months ago a stone was thrown up off the road from a vehicle in front and cracked the top of the widescreen. This has gradually worsened so phoned Autoglass 3 weeks ago to arrange a replacement using my insurance excess. This was all fairly straight forward until the technician came out 2 weeks ago, he stated that the 6 clips which hold the side moulding in place and run down each A pillar were completely rusted and need replacing. He took off each trim and showed me and they've basically disintegrated. He said they would need to order them directly from Ford and that they need riveted in and would arrange another date once they've arrived.......fair enough.

They came back out today, 3 weeks after the initial phone call to replace everything. When the boy arrived, I explained what happened previously and what had to get done and he didn't have a clue what I was talking about. He came out just to replace the windscreen, no clips. WTF So he phones HQ who in turn tell him to head back to base with a view to again ordering these clips and arranging another date. Bearing in mind, I've not driven this in 3 weeks since being advised not to.

Now just had a phonecall to advise me that these clips have been discontinued and they are unable to complete the job due to this. They won't even consider doing it without them as they need to be in place before the windscreen goes in. He then advised me to contact my insurance who in turn could write the car off as these clips aren't available and the job to fix it may outweigh the value of the vehicle. The car is mint and only has 50k on the clock and never missed a beat.

So long story short, has anyone ever encountered this problem with these clip? Does anyone have any ideas what my next step could be? Really don't want to write my car off. The guy at Autoglass has said that if I can source them myself then they would still do it as long as they're he proper part.

Really appreciate any help or advice, thanks a lot

Barry

As far as i remember those clips are there to hold the plastic trim arround the windscreen, nothing to do with the window itself. If we are talking about the same clips, you can look for a breaking cougar and get them for pennys. I replaced my windscreen some years ago, and they were like new, no rust, but im not from uk... anyway the key message is that they do not hold the windscreen, they hold the plastic trim. Lets eait for others to confirm that

Thanks for your reply.

The he guy I spoke to on the phone at Autoglass did say they were purely to hold the side mouldings in place and that without them, they weren't prepared to do the job as it meant it wasn't properly completed. A lot of rubbish if you ask me.

I can't imagine the Cougar was the only Ford to have those clips so it might be worth your while checking out some other models too.

I know, I find it hard to believe myself. As far as I know Autoglass contacted ford and the clips have been discontinued. Surely I can't be the only person in the UK that this has happened to. Think it's worth contacting Ford and some part suppliers myself just for piece of mind.

I would check out a few larger Ford dealers with parts departments to see if you can find anything similar. Welcome to the forum by the way. Hope you get it sorted.

Seems that Ford UK is going out of its way to drive the Cougar to an early grave, would have thought it was in there best interest to keep them on the road by providing parts thus more income for them, Ford US seem more helpful, they stock more parts it seems via there dealer network for older out of production cars.

I'd be surprised if the mk1 and mk2 mondeo didn't both use the same clips. They just slip on/off with a keyhole type slot, very easy to remove and replace. I don't see why the screen can't be replaced as the trim can be fixed with a few blobs of the sealant they use to fit the screen anyway. I would go the scrapyard route though. Just go and pull a few screen trims off and see what's underneath.

Welcome to UKCo :)

That's the thing I can't understand. It's just some minor clips that are obviously going to be affected by the elements as the only thing covering them is a black plastic trim so why would they not be readily available in the UK. Especially with the weather we get.

I've managed to get a part number so contacted a company in Sweden and also one in Germany. In case it happens to anyone else the number is F1071210, the f can be removed when searching.

From what I've been told by Autoglass, they're riveted on so what's left of the old ones has to be drilled out. I'll keep digging and see what I can find out and let you all know. Thanks for all the help so far folks.

Also, are ALL pieces completely ruined? It would be possible to hold the trim with at least two of them on one side, and the rest should be fixed with heavy duty water resistant glue. But this should be done by some car enthusiast, not in the shop, because they are almost always full of **** regarding those custom things, so it should be performed.by someone who has done this in the past... well good luck, let us know the result

Thanks for this. I'm doing a respray myself on my 98 cougar and was removing the trim today to have a look and I just saw rusty dust where I'm assuming the clips were.

Thought i would take a look at these clips on a scrap cougar in the breakers, there not riverted in they clip over a rivet and with a bit of force can be removed with a screw diver, i took four off in a few mins just in case there needed at some point.

hi
just had my windscreen replaced and had the same problem..they were ether dust or just lumps of flaky rust..

the screen chap used some mondeo ones(i didn't ask if they were mk2 or 3:oops: ) he had them brand new so must be avaliable. they looked different but fitted..
there not riveted in though ,there like a push fit on a post welded to the body..
stupid ford for making them outa mild steel:eek:

you beat me to it dakota

I enquired about these last year when my car was being resprayed.
They are indeed unique parts to the Cougar. In fact I managed to get hold of the last four that Ford had in stock but not enough to replace the whole set.
BTW the top clips on each side are different to the rest (FINIS 1070391).

But if Mondeo ones do the job, that's well worth knowing. Just need to figure out if they're Mk1/2 or Mk3.

Oh, and welcome to the club Bazza. (y)
