Automatic lights

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone has, or if it would be possible, connected the lights up directly to the ignition so the headlights automatically come on when the key is in the running position. If anyone has done this can anyone tell me which wires I would need to connect up to do this?

Ian, if you have the earlier, non-rectangular under-bonnet fuse box, the Scandinavian option for daytime running lamps involves putting a green relay in position R1 and a yellow 20amp fuse in position 4.

If you have the later, rectangular under-bonnet fuse box it is R11 and fuse 11 respectively.

I believe I have the non-rectangle one but I don't appear to have anywhere to put R1

Do the Scandi models have a different pull/push/twist light switch too?

That's an excellent question. As it happens, there seem to be different versions of the pull/twist even on UK models. Some follow the C&U regs and only allow your front fogs to come on when you're at dipped beam. Others lack the plastic ramp the enforces this, (so you can have your fogs on with sidelights).

We've never managed to get to the bottom of why this might be.

Is this in C&U?

I never knew that!

Essentially you can do this by just taking a switched live and energising the lamp relay; no car to probe the wiring on but it is a five minute job with a meter.

Even simpler method would be to short the switch wiring for the headlamps.

Well yes it is a UK model and I suspected that the relay wouldn't be there. What wiring does the relay usually connect up as I could maybe splice that and connect a relay directly to it.

In regards to the light switch I have the turn it right for park lights turn it right again for running lights and pull out for fog lights. With that said I do have the wiring for the front fog lights but have no idea how I'd turn them on.

I'll have a look at the TIS wiring diagrams and see if they shed any light on it.

The normal 2 litre light switch is: right once for side lights, right twice for headlamps, push in and left for parking lights, pull once for rear fogs at the headlamp on position.

For front fogs you'll need to get the appropriate switch from a V6 and pull once for front fogs, twice for both front and rear fogs with the switch in the headlamp on position although this varies with the switches, as described by Chris.

I've checked the wiring diagrams and if the DRL loom is fitted it will have four wires ending in a cross-shaped green plug that would fit in the empty cut-out in your fusebox from below to accept the relay from above.
Of the four wires; one is power, one is earth, one runs to a resistor hidden under the battery tray and one runs to the main light switch.
If it's there I would imagine the loom is fastened out of sight under the battery tray or fuse box.

If you want to add the front fogs; as well as changing the main light switch to a 'double-pull' one you will also need to upgrade the fog lamp fuse from 7.5 to 20 amps.

From the TIS wiring diagrams it appears that all LHD vehicles, not just Scandinavian ones, have the option to turn on either left-hand or right-hand parking lamps because of an extra position on the switch.

Ah, so only the side of the car that's in the road is illuminated?

Hi Guys, Speaking of lights my rear lights have today decided they don't want to work any more just as the dark nights are drawing in..typical ! Both left and right brake lights come on fine, as do both rear indicators, but rear and fogs are not having it
I have checked the bulbs and all good
Anyone got any ideas what it could be as both left and right are not working. Is there a sneaky fuse somewhere as I cant see anything on the manual and fuse layout that relates to any rear light fuse ? Or is it a relay ?

Any guidance gratefully received

An easy way for auto "on" headlights is to get a kit from ebay. I had the kit fitted on my C1 but never really used it. Parts or probably even the whole kit is in a tangled bundle in the cave. The kit enables either the headlights to be triggered by a very discreet screen mounted adjustable light sensor or on/off with ignition. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LED-Dayti...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item43d0e2371b

Fuse, er, 27 I think.

When I bought the Cougar I pulled out all the none-stock modified extras. One of these was xeon lights as they're illegal here and I found them to be quite awful at lighting up correctly. The second link seems to be similar to what I have in a Chrysler Neon which works however the lights are worse as they turn the daylight running off when the full beams are on.

I'll have a look for the loom but how do I lift the fuse box cover off to check?
