They're my overalls she pinched to sit on those seats for the tow home! Don't blame her!!! You guys are right - it's just filthy.

Or at least it was... while I was posting photos on forums Gill set to work on the interior. The driver's seat bolster is in good condition which is rare on these. We've hardly been precious with our blue one (same seats) and it's perfect after 171k but most are trashed. Presumably it's people who just fall into the seat and drag themselves over the leather? Who knows? This one's alright thankfully, although there is a fag-burn on the back seat and one on the headliner by the sunroof controls :mad2:. I have an idea to repair/reduce the appearance of those but that'll be later. Bigger fish to fry now!

I washed the outside to see what we really had. It's good but for a few greasy black marks - except that it's covered in rust-dust. Me thinks it's sat downwind of some grinding at some point. I'll clay bar the car first and see what lifts and what doesn't. It'll be a weekend on the abrasives I reckon though...

Amazing what a valet will do - that is looking so much better. Good luck with the engine transplant.


I'm thinking the engine is ok actually, although I might pre-emptively change the head gasket and do the timing belts at the same time. In the paperwork there are advisories on two front balljoints with slight ply and looking myself their rubbers are split. As luck would have it, I happen to have new balljoints in boxes in the boot of the other Rover. Spares commonality is a nice thing :LOL:

Here's the problems with the engine - the driveshaft has also mangled the alloy fitting the sensor screws into. I appears to be a part in it's own right though. The two bolts are bent and the fitting broken but the bolts still turn in their holes and the boss on the gearbox casting is fine ;)

The outer casing of the sensor has been obliterated. Naturally, that's where the sticker with the part number goes. There are at least 4 different types of crankshaft position sensors for the T-series :mad2:

At least they kept the rubbish in the car instead of depositing it all over the roads, verges, driveways and fields...........:mad5::mad5:
 
have u tried just wrapping the sensor with black insulating tape?? ;) i'm sure that'll do a trip! lol
 
I'm sure it will be up and running again in the very near future.

Good luck with it. Rover not my cup of tea but as be valeted extremly well.

Hope it was a bargain!!!!!
 
Tom, the sensor is completely goosed :LOL: There was about 4ft of copper fluff pulled out of the hole in it came from that was originally wound around the probe. There's also a little tip bit still in the hole. The probe part is supposed to be straight too.

Thanks Tim :) This car definately wont appeal to many, and it's the furthest thing from 'sporty' looks wise. I'm not quite sure what my attraction is. Objectively it's pretty bland outside and old-manish inside. I think it's aged well. To my eye it looks fresher than the E39 BMW 3-series, Mk1 Mondeo, Mk1 Vectra etc and the 1992 Honda Accord which it's based on. I like the lack of attention it brings.

It's scrubbed up well :) I'm seriously considering a pre-emptive head-gasket change though. A new Klinger gasket set on Ebay is £48 plus £13 for a set of head bolts. I've been astonished to see the number of off-the-shelf parts for the T-series. Everything from new turbochargers to various sets of forged pistons and conrods. Even an aftermarket crankshaft for £1350!!!

We'd like to do a couple more of these buy-broken/sell-running projects, but for financial reasons it'll probably only be flagship models in a range because these command the best premiums on the second hand market. Shame there wasn't a Cougar RS. Maybe a fast Focus or Racing Puma type of thing though? We'll take them one at a time and see what appears for sale :)
 
Good work Jamie and Gill, it looks like a goodn under the scum. A bit like our Fiesta, what a state that was in too, more rubbish in that than your rover. Shame i didnt get any pics though.
 
I've just spent an hour with T-cut and a clay bar on the boot lid. Fortunately all the rusty dots and hundreds of black tar spots (jeez white paint doesn't half show up EVERYTHING. Actually it hides dents well, unlike black, but shows up all the dirt much worse) came out. The paint is actually an icy white rather than a creamy white which we thought it was :)

It's rather nice actually - but I've still got a lot of manual labour ahead and the rest of the car to do. Ho hum - it will be worth it. The boot lid has gone from "good condition for age" to "immaculate". Woohoo!
 
We've got an xr2 mkII on the go at the moment uh oh some else has got the bug!. will post piccies once it is back from body shop. also got a mkV escort cab and fiesta 1.6 si. don't think we'll ever learn!.
 
When one of my front EBC pads decided to fall apart 20 miles from home from metal to metal on the disc it caked the side of the car in fine metal dust that seemed to be ground in. T-Cut hardly touched it, in the end i bought a cheap Silverline rotary polisher and pads from eBay ,still took a few hours to get the stuff off though.
 
well a cheap and quck one i used to use on white cars was jif give it a quick wash then use the jif to was again same as tcut with out the rubbing
 
Jamie, to get rid of the metal filings, gently drag a knife blade over the paint sideways, it picks out the filings so its easier to start polishing (had to do this on some glass once cos some muppet didnt cover it!!!) and yes it does work on paint, just be carefull! We use this on carbon all the time to remove pimples in the moulds

is there anything you can use to get scratches outt of glass?

I've heard toothpaste is pretty good and I'm not kidding - apparantly it's got abrasive qualities in it. I've used it before to get small scratches out of watch faces. Give it a go (y)
