Bad Influences....

It's gonna be tomorrow now :(

The little petrol flap locking pin thingie needed replaced but the new one hasn't turned up yet. The only real downside for me is that I have the X-Type with me today assuming a trade-in and the trip computer says 19 miles remaining which I'd planned to use most of taking it to the dealer for the swap. Now I'm gonna have to put another tenner in to get me home and back in again tomorrow

jamie.. what was the X-Type like??
i'm thinking about changing and i've seen a few of the 2.0d for sale recently...
yea, they're a bit old manish (no offence meant lol) but i can't help but think they look good and must be a decent car to drive?? and the 48mpg wouldn't hurt either!!??

Good evening Tom, long time no speak :)

The X-Type... depends what you're comparing it to. My view has been slanted slightly because I went Mk2.5 MX-5 Sport to X-Type and now to S-Type Sport, which is RWD to 4WD to RWD again. The diesel X-Types are all FWD.

The steering feels a little vague compared to the RWD cars either side of mine, but it's no worse than any other FWD car. It's certainly not lacking in grip. I don't know how the on-limit FWD X-Types handle but the 4wd ones can be drifted quite nicely on throttle  FWD ones probably handle a lot like the Mk3 Mondeo - which isn't bad. They all ride better than a Cougar at all speeds (but not as well as the S-Type) and body roll is good even on the softer ones like mine.

It's rather well built despite what people repairing Audi's will try to tell you. Mine is approaching 71k with absolutely no squeaks/rattles/other unhealthy noises whatsoever. The interior uses much better materials in it's construction than the Mondeo and IMHO it's better built, feels nicer and looks better than my mate's E46 BMW 325.

The SE models are the wooden dash insert ones - if you go for a Sport or Sport Premium you'll get black wood or CF inserts instead, and some pretty bl**dy great seats too which you'll love compared to a Mk1 Cougar's.

The 2.2 diesel is the same as the Mondeo ST TDCi and goes like sh** of a shiny shovel.

The 2.1 V6 is a waste of space really as the diesels out perform it. The 2.5V6 is a nice engine and the 3.0 V6 with manual gearbox will cost you Cougar V6 money to run but does 0-60 in about 6.8 seconds IIRC. The 5 speed autos (like mine) are fine but nothing great by today's standards. The new diesels are available with the 6 speed ZF auto which is ace (and the gearbox in my new S-Type) and the manuals are all pretty slick too. 2.5 and 3.0 V6 manuals can suffer premature clutch failures because the traction is phenominal with 4WD and the clutch is what suffers.

I'm wondering if I may miss that about the X-Type actually... it's the kind of car you can pull up to a wet T-junction with, see someone coming and think "F*** it - I'm going anyway" and just hoof the loud pedal. It takes off like a scalded cat

Thanks for the advice Jamie....

I'm kindof in a bit of a bind at the moment.. I'm thinking about changing from the cougar but have no need too and dont really know what to change too..

http://preview.tinyurl.com/cs2o6u this is the Jag that caught my eye initially and i know for a fact it's been on auto trader for at least 2 months, so that price will be VERY negoitable by now.. The high(ish) mileage doesn't really bother me as i do soo few miles per year (> 4500) but then my low mileage is another reason why i don't need to change the car at all... Although as i rule of thumb at the moment i don't want to spend over ?ú5000 for a car and it would need to be pretty exceptional to even go that far as i'm just not getting enough use out of it.

Indeed ur right about the SE models coming with the wood trim.. I just couldn't bring myself to buy that so it'd have to be at least the sport model.... That sadly doesn't bring their prices down tho :(

My other option is something like this... http://preview.tinyurl.com/cgk3b8 now don't be afraid!!! I realise it's an Alfa but they are actually making pretty good cars at the moment!!! My brother has owned 2 of these in the past and has just got the new 159 too.. The 156 1.9JtDM is a good engine (economical too) and goes like stink when pushed... And i must admit they are a goooood looking car! I think the sellers asking a bit much in the current climate considering all the bit and pieces it needs doing to it and sadly he declined my ?ú2000 'best offer'

Ultimately what i REALLY want and i'd consider spending money on is this: http://preview.tinyurl.com/dhjqm5 :) now this is a SEXY looking bit of metal!! And their prices are dropping quickly!!! A few of them have appeared on camp recently as a Regiment Sqn just came back from Iraq and felt the need to blow their bonuses on something :wink5: so i must get some feedback on them as i've got a feeling it'll prob be one of these i end up getting as I think i'd always feel the jag or 156 would only be a temporary thing till i spotted the GT that i fancied....

Soooo... To cut a long story short...
Anyone fancy buying my Cat or just giving me ?ú5000 to spend on a new car would be even better!!

Tom, I've got a hell of an Alfa soft spot too

I'd be happy with any of the above, although I dont know if I'd go for a FWD X-Type to be completely honest because it's just not the same as the 4WD.

If your annual milage is so low is fuel consumption really a big issue? Diesel cars are still commanding a premium at the moment. There was a gold S-Type next to mine on the forecourt with 4,000 miles more on the clock but asking ?ú3,000 more because it was a 2.7d versus my 3.0 petrol.

You may find petrol models of the same cars within your price range and the price difference compared to diesels greater than a couple of years' worth of fuel costs. :)

If your annual milage is so low is fuel consumption really a big issue?

Jamie.. i've gone through that arguement myself many times too and i can only see it as a nearly 50/50 split over time...

Yes i'm only doing low miles per year but the 2.0JTS are only giving (officially) 32mpg where as the 1.9JtDM can do 45mpg if driven normally and the road tax is ?ú145 v ?ú215 per year in favour of the diesel..

Additionally i'm thinking of trying to buy a house in the next few months so i'll have to start commuting to work (albeit not far - hopefully 20 miles each way at most) but then the diesel wins that battle too...

Quite surprisingly too the petrols are not that much cheaper to buy.. Fair enough for the same money you will maybe get 20,000 less miles and 1 or 2 years younger but alot of the ones available are the 1.9 diesels.. :)

Overall if i kept the car for say 3, at most 4 years it would still be cheaper to buy and run the petrol model by about ?ú500 give or take.. But my big thing at the minute is that i get sad staring at the cougar guage that seems to say 25mpg forever... I WANT 45-50mpg!! That in itself, i realise, is not a good enough reason to buy a diesel but i think the resale potential is what swings the deal for me.. In a few years time i'll either have a high milage petrol worth possibly ?ú750-?ú1000 that's expensive to run and therefore not alot of ppl will want (just as I am now with the cougar) or a high milage diesel that's cheap to run and looks good....

It's tricky.. and i'm still not sure i'm even gonna change the car at all!! But i can't help seeing those GT's and thinking.. I WANT ONE!!!!

Just buy a C2 Tom ;) see if you can get a 51plate (one of the darts team at work has just got one for his Mrs)

I always liked the Red X-types Sports, just for the fact its a mental colour to be on a Jag

C2???? i thought they had died out years ago?????
endangered species thesedays i hear!!?? lol ;)

The ammount of money I've spent on mine the past month, I wish they had ;)

what u need is a good black C1 with a Roush Kit and never cost a penny to maintain.. ;) hmmm now if only i knew someone thinking about selling theirs...

btw... jamie.. sorry.. completely hijacked your thread!!!
my apologies!

NO worries Tom

I picked it up yesterday, but there was a comms breakdown at Jag and it wasn't actually finished so it has to go back :(

That said however, my friend from work came along to pick it up (owns a 2003 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro) who commented that we were talking at library volumes as we drove along a cobbled road. :) It also has a rather nice exhaust note on song - then it all gets very quiet again in the cruise. In 6th it does 70mph at around 2050rpm and I got 32mpg at that speed on the way home, and 22mpg taking the backroads in this morning. I didn't consider this morning particularly fast, but thinking back I caught a few other cars, whereas normally other cars catch me on the backroads  I suspect there's room for improvement on the 22mpg then...

I've taken a couple of photos but I'm having USB issues just now, and besides, I need to figure out how to transfer my phone contacts onto the car's system, which is hard for an old fart like me

To summarise Tom - it's MUCH better than the X-Type, and not a more expensive second hand. Had this car been there the day I bought the X-Type, I'd have had this a while by now ;)

Finally a few crappy pictures of the new Jag.

I should state that I switched on the front fogs as a weak attempt at arty-fartiness. I have infact had sex with a female human more than once though, so therefore I don't drive around with them on unless it's foggy. Just thought I'd clear that one up! Those with road-legal eyesight will spot that the N/S front foglight surround is missing. Jaguar are collecting it on Tuesday to replace that and repair the petrol flap catch (communications break-down at their end - someone said it was finished and it wasn't).

I'll get some better ones in a nicer location, with better light and taken with the SLR and not a mobile phone at some point

And for you Paul, here's the Rover. A bird has crapped on it, and I'm not cleaning/polishing the damned thing until it learns to keep it's brake fluid inside the pipes and calipers!

looks nice!!

so are u gonna change the side repeaters or are u scared that'll kick start something bigger???? ;)

G'Day Tom.

I'd like to, but nobody makes clear reflectors. I could paint them black, but I'm undecided on how that would look. Clear repeaters and orange reflectors would look positively stupid, and I have a sneaky feeling that black painted reflectors will look like an afterthought (because the join onto the bumper inserts will still be there).

I'm sitting on this one for the time being, and not rushing in. It definately wont be having a mix of orange and clear though.

Incidently, the repeaters are the same as the Cougar ones, so if anyone has a set of crystal clear ones then hand'em over

I fancy the S-Type R spoiler. I have actually been looking at the Sport Collection bodykit but it's rather expensive once you've bought the proper Jaguar mesh grille inserts etc to go with it. That said, it's an OEM bodykit and the mesh grille inserts actually clip onto the bumper properly, rather than using halfords mesh held on with tie-wraps which doesn't look great up close

I'm experimenting with tyre pressures just now. Jaguar set them all to 31psi which gives a near silent ride and feels as harsh over potholes as a hovercraft - but the fuel consumption is fairly poor. Last night I set them to 38psi which is a little better but the ride is a little noisier and harsher. Noiser and harsher are relative I suppose - it's still better than the X-Type which was better than the Cougar, but I'm not happy. I'm going to try 34psi tonight and see if I can get a compromise.

The basic fuel consumption problem is leadfootedness. The Jaguared 3.0 engine is fantastic and the ZF auto compliments it incredibly well. It's so easy to 'take it easy' in this car whilst still actually accelerating pretty bl**dy quick compared to everyone else and the petrol used doing so is quite high to match. Just using 1/3 throttle to accelerate does not equate to economical driving - it still leaves the average 1.6 hatchback behind.

Oddly enough it's a lot faster on backroads than the X-Type was despite it's extra size - or at least, both Gill and I comfortably drive it faster. That stings though... 20mpg average.

I think the V8 and STR would be quite a machine... The 3.0 doesn't sound fast on paper and in reality isn't any faster to 60 than a ham sandwich but combined with that gearbox it's best described as effortless :)

Very happy with it!
